La Jolla-July 3rd

I took my 12 year old son and good friend Eric out to fish the Calicos at La Jolla this morning. We got a half scoop of anchovies and sardines and headed out at 6:00am or so. I am sure, you guys have figured it out but the water rolled big time. I metered water as cold as 57.5 degrees and no higher than 61 degrees. It was a little bumpy but no big deal. The bait liked it but the fishing was tougher than Father's Day weekend. We got very few Calicos on the plastics but nailed quite a few on the anchovies. We end up with around 20 or so calico bass but kept just two. The mackeral hammered us and we basically ran out of anchovies. The sardines were not working for us. We headed back in at around 12:00pm. The DFG was out in their rubber boat and checked us out pretty well. They even looked in the anchor hatch for hidden fish but skipped looking in my back hatches. Nice enough guys but they were stopping a lot of boats. So, make sure you have you stuff up to snuff because they will likely be out all weekend. If you fish tommorrow, load up on the anchovies and fly line them right into the kelp. Don't bother anchoring. Just set up a good drift and keep at it. Sorry, no pictures, but you all know what a calico bass and a smart ass 12 year old boy looks like. To all of you servicemen and women, thank you for your service to our country and have a happy 4th of July.

Thanks for the report.... And also the heads up on the DFG. There out there every holiday waiting like vultures. He's right make sure you have everything in order. I speak from experience. Last 4th I did not. It resulted in a very exspensive ticket. Never again. Thanks again and tight lines.

I was there today also, I caught a calico and other by-catch. I did not see one yellow or wsb caught. The conditions are still not as good as they have been for this time of year. I know, a couple more weeks! Sure beats work.

DFG out on the 4th

I believe no license is required tomorrow as the state has made it a no lic. day(they do this twice a year) but make sure your fish or fillets are legal(skin patch and length.Good luck all and happy fourth.

Vultures? I thought they were out there to protect out fish species? "That's a pretty harsh word, and no reason to use it to describe the game wardens. In all my years of fishing I've only met one or two that I would describe as asses. The rest have always been patient and friendly.

Your being caught without a license is your fault, no one's else. Glad you learned that.

Oh, and thanks for the fish report.

So when a DFG is doing his job....They are "VULTURES"....Wow???

I actually appreciate having them out there... as too many people don't play by the rules... It just makes it better for the fisherman that have the required licenses and gear... It will thin out the players that keep under size fish and have no licenses from raping the resource.. and hopfully when they get caught they will pay big fines.....I see from the above quote you recieved a very expensive ticket ....lesson learned and there are plenty others that need to learn ......that's why the DFG are there to keep us honest.....

Don't get your panties all bunched up there Tony. I happend to follow all of the DFG rules. Although....... even some of the best of us make honest mistake's and with me that was the case.

Oh and BTW I never said I got caught without a license. You should find out the facts before you open your Pie Hole.

What gear are you guys talking about. I know you need the fishing license. Is the the ocean enhancement stamp needed. I always get it, but I would like to know if it is really need it. What other things do they check for besides under sized fish.
