I was Stoked that I could make this trip, glad I did... Here is the report.
Friday night I arrived down at Pierpoint a little early, It was grand prix weekend and they close off most of the streets to the landing and sometimes it is like a maze to get around to the local business's down there. Sun was going down and weather was really nice.
Made my way down to the boat and met cook/deckhand Jason, loaded my gear and met the other anglers as they arrived. 3 of the anglers flew in from Pheonix AZ, they were amping and ready to catch something. So we did the deal as the crew got everything ready for departure.
I took a walk around the boat and checked things out. The Pacific quest is really a nice rig, totally comfortable, Here is the bunk room.
And the wheelhouse.
Shortly after we were headed out of the landing and on our way.
Stopped at the reciever and loaded on some sardine and live squid.
Headed over to CAT for some more live squid, picked up a nice load and it was on to Clemente.
After they loaded the squid I went down and caught a little nap, woke up to a killer sunrise at clemente, with the Black Pearl in the background.
Saturday we fished rockfish at SCI, Capt put us over some really good spots and it wasnt long before we were lacing up the fish. The guys from Pheonix were having a blast.
Bill and Josh with a goat.
Josh, Earl and Greg.
Greg and Earl at the rail.
Jason and Greg with a nice Ling, I busted off a good one right at the boat...and another soon after that... It happens i guess.
Josh and Brian with a Johnny bass
Jay with a nice red.
So, loaded up the limits of rockfish and headed over to CAT.
Jason can make some great food, really great food, Breakfast burritos, full on dinner with dessert.....good stuff.
Parked on the beach at Catalina.
Here is crew member Alan with a calico he pulled from the kelpline.
Saturday night, went to the bait grounds and the crew was rigging up the lights to bring up some squid. Not long after there was a good amount of squid up at the boat, Jason, Alan and Josh worked and put on a few scoops of live squid.
Capt. Josh called in a light boat that was in front of us and let him have the float we had going, He motored over, got close enough and Josh killed the light and they went right over to the light boat, pretty cool pass off.
We anchored up tight at cat for the night, not long after dropping the pick, josh looks in the tank and all of the squid had rolled, there were maybe 20 pieces left that were still alive. A fish had got lodged in the chute and the tank wasnt flowing much at all. lots of dead squirts. So, with no squid, Josh and Greg pull anchor and set out to find some, Alan sets up the lights again and we go. We saw the light boat that we passed off the squid to earlier that night and he passed off some live squid to us after he heard about the die off... Karma is good.
Went back to anchor up again and I went down for a rest. Woke up and it was nice and cool, marine layer burned off and it was beautiful out there.
Bill fishing the beach at cat.
Earl sticks a keeper Halibut.
Later in the day, we spot one of the eagles, Jason calls him in with a mackerel.
And down he comes, It is great to see these birds close up, really amazing.
Earl hooked into something good that we thought might be the right kind but felt like a ray, yep...big bat ray. But he had fun doing it.
The crew Did a great job of looking and trying to find a seabass or yellow but the conditions just weren there, They put in %110 though, and we hopped around a few more times trying to find some good water.
Later it was time to head home, so out come the fish from the RSW for cleaning.
Josh Doing some cutting.
Alan helping out on the cleaning duties.
Then into the harbor and its home sweet home.
Thats that, I just want to Thank Greg, Josh, Alan, and Jason for the hard work, they were a great crew, one of the best boats I have had the chance to ride on. The crew was awesome, very helpful and we had lots of laughs, thanks again guys, Hope to see you again soon!
