Unhappy Yellow Tail/Dodo/Albacore Tips..

Does anyone have any tips on patty hopping or island fishing we go out all the the time on our boat and never have any luck on the patties or the island. Some of the patties we come across are bigger than out boat and wondering why they arent holding. If anyone can give me some tips/spots I would really appreciate it!

Thanks Alot

Tay

There is some great info under "Tutorials" for paddy's and in general.

Sometimes there is nobody home under the paddy but they are cruising a 100 yards around it and you drove past them to get to the paddy. I only use idle speed within a 100 yards. This way I can see which way the drift is going to be and am looking for breaking fish in the general area.

Fish the Middle Grounds or South Kelp Ridge there is always something home. You can always bottom fish (GASP!) if the surface bite sucks.

I would've voted for paddy fishing but I've rarely done that "inshore" like the poll asks.
Jeez! When I get all precise like this it's nature's way of saying I gotta' get some. (Fishing, of course!)

This may seem obvious but when paddy fishing you should be in the area that you want to fish by grey light or before. You need to be the first one to hit a few paddies cause by midday they've been hammered pretty well. Also take an alternate route to the high spot your going to be fishing (especially if you get a late start). For example- If your going to fish the 302 and launching at Mission Bay well then start your day heading a few miles North so as to avoid the straight line that has allready been hit on by the masses.

Sneak up on the paddys. Never ever ever touch the paddy with your boat. Go where the fish are, don't get caught up where the fish aren't. Slow troll deans around the kelp about 50-100 yards off to trigger them to bite. When there not biting and the kelps holding, try chunking sardines.

Finding fresh kelps is important.-Fish away from the crowds and get out there early. Go longer to find fresh stuff. Don't try and force it where its not happening-i.e. shit ain't biting-no troll fish, pick up and run west/south and find some life and start fishing again.

Also-its so good now, find your own stuff and leave boats that found there own stuff alone.

Good Luck!

This thread helps.

BTW, where exactly is the '302', the 295, or the 495. I hear references to all these various locations with no idea how to find them on a chart. Are they fathom markers for a shoal area or a coordinates reference?

I fish out of Long Beach a lot and plan to hit the island a time or two. I gotta ask though, would it be worth it to take the boat down to Mission Bay and run 25 miles west of there for pelegics?

Thanks for the pointers!

Here is one, do not drive on top of the Fing paddy boyz!
If you do not spook them, the Dodos will cruse around the paddy.
They will be 50 yards from it circling it. OK! If you spook them, they will be ghost!
Just go up wind/current put out the baits an try to drift buy about 50' from it.
That did the trick last time, at least until some fool drives on top of it and puts down the bite. I'm planing on a Sat hunt, so let work together out there and take home some fish

CJBrown--One of the best (and cheapest) hot spot maps for SD off-shore can be found for free at: FishingSpots. It has both GPS waypoints and quick map so you can plan your routes and autopilot your points.

Tight lines!

Thanks!
That's exactly what I needed.
Now I just have to find out what I need if we get into Mexican waters...I hear they discontinued the boat permit requirement. But mexican fishing licenses??
