| O.C. takes 4th of July to Loreto…Dorado, Dorado, Dorado!!
I know, late report, spent the last 4 days in Mexico City...but had to share... OH WHAT A TRIP!! If you have ever considered going to fish Loreto READ THIS PLEASE!! - Enjoy the pics My Dad has been to Loreto, Mex a few times in the past for Dorado and Yellowtail, and has had great fishing, but hasn’t been back for over 12 years. He and my Mom moved to Arizona from Orange County a few years ago, and sold their boat…I miss them, and miss fishing with him a ton! So we planned a trip over 4th of July for just he and I to Loreto to target Dorado. I had been reading the reports over the weeks leading up to the trip that the fishing had been hot (not unlike the weather), and that the big bull Dorado had been moving in early this year…the anticipation continued to build. My Dad took the lead on making the arrangements, we booked through Big Game Fishing, and they handled the whole package; flights, hotel, fishing, transportation, etc. We stayed at the Hotel Oasis, right on the beach, only 40 rooms, great staff, good food, plenty of booze, 10 minute walk to town, perfect little fishing hotel. We arrived in Loreto Thursday afternoon, greeted by our driver, loaded up the A/C van (thank God) and headed to the hotel, settled in, grabbed a drink, set up fishing with Daniel @ the hotel, made sure we had a stocked cooler for the AM, headed into town and had a FANTASTIC dinner at La Palapa, amazing seafood, Mexican food, and great drinks in an outdoor setting, can’t beat it. Next day, 5:00 AM wake-up call comes, throw on the fishing garb, head down to breakfast, get our fishing wrist bands for the day (the area around Loreto Bay in the Sea of Cortez is a park reserved for paying sport fishing only, no commercial), jumped on the panga by 6:00 and we were off. Made quick bait of sardinas and makerela, and were off to find the Dorado. Made a quick stop at the first Sargasso we spotted, and I hooked up on my first Dorado, EVER. Had the first fish in the boat by 7:30, (see the pic below, yes, she wasn’t huge, but my first, and I’ll take it)…was liking this place already. We went on and continued to troll, find patches of Sargasso, and managed to hit limits of Dorado by about 11:30, the three biggest in the 20 # class, with a full boat heading back to the hotel by 12:30 or 1:00. We ended up with 30# of filets the first day, vacuum sealed and in the freezer. Headed into town for the afternoon, and stopped by Augie’s, a restaurant/bar/tackle shop on the water and had plenty to drink. Augie is originally from San Diego and had a group of his American friends that live/travel to Loreto and they were having a July 4th potluck. We were invited to join and made the most of it...THANKS AUGIE!! The next morning, 5:00 came early, along with a nasty hangover and nausea, but we made it out, and the fishing was WIDE OPEN!! In a nutshell, the Dorado were hitting everything from mackerel, to sardines, to cut jumbo squid, and sometimes even an empty hook on the retrieve. My Dad would have a fish on, and there would be another 40 or 50 Dorado under the boat following, the toughest part was trying to specifically target the big bulls. We ended up keeping four fish, the largest going 35#, but all over 30#...What a day! We ended up with 46# of filets from 4 fish that day. Ended up hanging for the rest of the day at the bar with new So Cal friends from San Clemente and Culver City, big shouts, happy birthday to STEVE, the big 60! Good people. Look forward to doing it again. Did dinner again at La Palapa, and the Pescado Veracruz was so good, I asked for the recipe, and "Mama" came over and hand-wrote her recipe from memory for me, and gave me the number to the restaurant, should I have any questions…AWESOME! Only in Mexico. Day three we popped up early, targeted more Yellowtail, but they were apparently full on the 3 foot jumbo squid we continued to hook instead. Headed out for a quick limit on the Dorado, gave them away, headed back to the hotel, showered, packed up 70 lbs of filets into the coolers and home we headed. The overall experience exceeded my every expectation—fishing was insane, vibe was unmatched, hospitality was awesome, but being able to kick it, fish, eat and drink with my Dad for three days straight was PRICELESS!! |
