It all depends what you want to fish for.If you want to stay local, head south to the "BARN KELP" Anchor up outside the kelp and throw a flylined dine into the kelp for Calico,s etc. Put one on the bottom for halibut etc. I have also caught Yellowtail and WSB this way.

From DP you can go north for some Barracuda towards the Newport area plus various kelps along the way. South you can hit Mateo Pt for various critters in the kelp plus you got San O just past there.
I like the idea that since your on the road just keep going till you get to San Diego, or keep going from their till you hit La Paz |

If you head North, fish the kelp areas off the Ritz for bass & halibut. Head farther North into Laguna and you'll find some good boiler fishing....

you could also hit the 267 or 209 for Mako's and bonies, and maybe a yellowfin.. a sure bet would be to grab a chum bucket at the fuel dock, make some macs by the pole or buy half scoop, set up out there on 267 or 209 and wait for the sharks, get a predator relase stick and have fun on light gear..we actually had a Marlin come up our chum slick last year, but weren't prepared...good luck.

If you wanna go to the Barn kelp, it's situated aong the cliffs between O'side Harbour and San'O. You'd be beter off launching from O'Side, then go north. Or even a little further to the big pink tities. Lots of kelp. I like to drop a heavy rig to the bottom with a big bait and wait for the WSB, Yellowtail, big ass bass, halibut to make a show. All the while fish my lighter gear with fly lined bait, plastics, iron (blue and white has been working good lately) etc.
If you insist on going out of Dana, the San Mateo kelp is at the south end of San Clemente, past the pier where the cliffs end. Or you could go north to Salt Creek, just a couple of miles, you'll see a long stretch of beach and the Ritz Carlton, big kelp. C&Red a 60+ BSB there last week. Lots of sharks though. Or continue north to the kelp and boilers off Laguna. Good luck
