BONITO BIG TIME!!

Got a call from my buddy thursday he was telling me the big bonito are movin in. Chomped at the bit thursday and friday night at work. Saturday finally came and my son, Bobby and I headed out around 6:00 am. from newport harbor. Headed south about 4 miles off the beach, saw plenty of bird life off of Laguna, but no jig strikes. Continued working south of Dana Point. Found a big porpose school just north of San Mateo point about 3 miles out. Put the jigs back out and worked the bait schools, no love..Headed further off shore and found some more bird schools, and the 2 trollers got bit. Game on we had 2 on the boat..Bait schools being busted up by the bonito everywhere, birds crashing, and we slid in on it and instant bendo on the iron, we had three going at once, W.F.O. for a couple of hours, we had a school of bait hiding right under the boat, and we held a school for a while. We ended up with our limits on the bigger models for three of us. 1 small one around 6#'s most were the 9 - 10 #ers. we got 3 over 11 #'s with the biggest one weighing 14#'s on a spring scale which was caught by my son Aaron on 15# test and a krockadile. weather was good until we headed back to Newport, got beat up from dana poing the rest of the way...Great day on the water, i can't remember the last time i have seen these big bonito up here this early in the season..Come on Albies!!!!

I know the larger tuna run with/under the porpoise but I think if there were Bones about they would be too busy running from said porpoise.

We tried the same thing one huge pod of porpoise Friday. Whatever they were chasing were not interested in our lures.

Eric, I really enjoy your reports especially seeing pictures of your boat. It brings a tear to my eyes seeing your boat.
Nice going on the fish. We will probably go out for them this Sat.
