We booked a new date for May 5th and 6th. We headed out Sunday night to the island and started fishing at 3:00 am. Had some breakoffs but not much luck so we stayed until 9 and started moving looking for the ghost. We went drifting for halibut and I had picked up one. The deckhand telling us there are white seabass on the other side of the boat, right on the surface a big school, BIG fish! We anchored and started the time of our lives! I think this is a once in a lifetime event! We has so many fish break off. I have heard these fish go stupid, the engine noise did not bother them. We were in 20 ft of water. These fish were snapping my 40 pound line. I had one fish heading for the kelp and had almost spooled me, he broke off and the decky told me it was a good 60 pound fish. | I Hate Seabass!!! Name: Tim Age: 45 Vessel: None Location: San Clemente Job: Will refinance your home for food... Images: 190 | Very nice. You guys timed it just right getting those fish Monday afternoon. Tuesday morning, as several boats were bit on seabass in that location, the navy ordered everyone out due to the placement of underwater demolitions in that very area. The island was open but the navy is not to happy about people fishing in that particular area. The best way to get rid of the fisherman is to rid of the fish. I fished yesterday with Watson on the Dreamer. Tuesday morning as he was hanging fish he was ordered to move out to sea one mile immediately. He told me that when that charge detonated it rattled his boat and shook the windows from a mile a way. He joked that he could of picked up the rest of his passengers limits from the "floaters". Obviously the blast shut down the bite as the fish got the hell out of there, if they survived. We ended up fishing Catalina Wednesday as a result. Jeff was there with us. Niether of us had any seabass at Catalina even though the water was 61 degrees with fairly good conditions. We just could not get them to bite... It really irks me that with all this MLPA crap going on resulting in the majority of these islands being closed to fishing come January first that the Navy could detonate something as powerful as that in 20 feet of water next to a very healthy kelp bed. How do you quantify that damage? Oh well, sorry for the rant and thread jack... Like I said your timing was impeccable!!! Congrats! |
