Bill and I booked the trip based on an e-mail and website posting of an open party leaving Thursday at 9 pm fishing Friday. Bill can't fish weekends so I took a needed day off. Now I have been lucky with the ghosts, but Bill has been called Taboo and Mr Voodoo, has only caught 3 WSB, and we have NEVER both caught a WSB on the same trip.
Bill and I got to the landing around 7, got our overnight parking pass and walked through the landing over to "restaraunt row" and grabbed a few appetizers and beverages at OutBack. Actually, seared tuna slices with a dipping sauce, a cup of chowder and a blooming onion.
Bill had a beer and I had an Iced Tea.
While paying the tab, 3 people got our attention and we found that these three had also signed up to fish the Old Number 7 and they were finishing up dinner.
Bill and I headed back to the landing, got our gear and headed to the boat.
The other couple with their neighbor (the folks that we met at Outback) were not far behind us.
Now these three people Arlette, Ray and their neighbor had never fished the Old Number 7 and never met Jeff and or crew.
So there were the 5 passengers, ready to load at 8:30.
Apparently the final passenger had some misinformation and thought the boat left at a later departure time.
Be that as it may, we waited a good 1/2 hour or more for the other passenger, and then left the dock around 9:30 pm.
We had a very nice crossing, and the squid was floating nicely at around 2 am.
Up again around 5 am to start the day. Clear skies and bright stars at the island and hardly a breeze.
At around 6, hot coffee and cinnamon rolls for all while we set up and proceeded to do the WSB wait.
Not a huge current, so 1/2 oz weight and a 2/0 hook was the way to go, well, except me I went with the 1 oz leadhead.
Bill was first to hook up and ran to the bow and the first WSB on the board. Not bad, not huge in the 18# range. Great dinner size.
We made a few moves and then the tiniest little cali's came out to play.
Next was breakfast scrambled eggs, french toast and sausage.
Lots of life in the water, but the water is still a tad cold.
Next to hook up was Tyson, a nice young man who landed a good 30#er. I think he told me that was his second only WSB.
We made a few moves and finally I was on. Super quick to the boat (fishing the heavier line) and a respectable ghost hits the deck for me.
Weather was hot, so I dug into the bag and got a t shirt from Bills stash as my shirt wasn't cutting it. Now I looked like I was wearing a dress but I was comfy.
We then had a great lunch of ceasar salad, fettucini alfredo, grilled chicken and garlic bread.
We hit the afternoon bite at another location and we finished up the day with 5 WSB, 15 to 30 lb range.
Absolutely a beautiful day on the water. The calis are starting to chew, saw some mini yellowtail in with the mini macs and perch eating the chum.
