What a zoo. Had a great plan last opener, got lazy this year and sat along side the road with all the other morphadites (self included - never again).

Too many Elmer Fudds walking around thinking they'll just walk up to a turkey and shoot it. I hate public land!

Actually, it goes until the first weekend in May. If you use a Bow, it goes 2 weeks longer, I think....

Mike, you must have been in the super secret spot. I didn't see your rig in any of the regular areas. You gonna hunt during the week?

We set up on the south side of Los Huecos before sunrise (Saturday). We had a few guys walking through the area. We set up the decoys and didn't start calling or making any noise until about 7:30. Once I made one call, we had two sets of hunters walking through the area. I think that my Primos call attracts hunters and not turkeys. These guys would walk for 20 yards and call, walk for 20 yards and call. With everyone walking around we thought it would be better to stay in one spot and see what comes by. NOT!

Lots of map time..... I found a place between 2 parcels of private property. I was on public land. I heard some gobblin early but saw no toms. Had to hike in.

I just finidhed shooting my bow at 60 yds. I'm ready now but prolly will never see one close enough the rest of the season.

Just spend a few bucks and hunt on some private land.

Secret spot wasn't soo secret. Only one hunter in there but the valley is only 100 yards so I left it for him. Went to another spot and couldn't believe I was the only one in there. Huge valley all to myself...and I mean all to myself! Not a damn thing in there! So I thought I would try Gatorfans route and do a little driving @ 9:30a.m. Drove up to the North side of Los Heucos but not a peep. Drove a little farther and spotted a group of five with a nice tom strutting around. Perfect little meadow for a stalk with the wet weather and wind and all right...not. I get within 50 yards and all the birds have their heads in the air looking back at me. Shit! So I give a couple soft yelps hoping they go back to doing what turkeys do but they decided to move. Not fast but fast enough to keep me at 50 yards in a helacious cross wind. So the birds head over a little ridge and at this point I'm ready to run for it to see if I can make up 20 yards and I hear "honey look...TURKEYS!" So I watch as my feathered friends hit mach speed! I love nature hikers don't you? So I tried to guess where they were running and set up a decoy in front of them and call...and call...and call...etc. Maybe next week!

I wish I could have made it until 0930. I set up at 0500 and should have left then. I was in the same spot that I have hunted on opening day for the last 5 years. It's a small 2-3 acre meadow with a huge oak in the middle. Apparently the early bird got there first and wanted everyone to know because he was under the oak with his head lamp on and shining in until first light. The moon was so high and bright that I didn't even need a light to get to my spot. Let me back up a bit. I was staying at my buddy's place Friday to have a few frosty beverages before the opener and was greeted with the other six guys that he had invited. Between them and his son and his friend, there were 10 of us. That is about the limit for the area we were hunting. I decided to park at our spot and sleep in the truck so as to kind of stake claim.....not! I get there around midnight and 10 minutes later a truck with 2 more guys show up and tell me that they're hunting the same spot. I told them how many people were in our party and they say it's gonna be crowded.....ya think? Of course what they didn't tell me is that they had 4 more guys in their party that showed up at 0400. These guys all head in at 0430 with lights-a-shinin'. I wonder if they all think that the birds high up in their roost couldn't see all the lights. Any how back to my set-up. I was the only one hunting with the bow so I thought I'd let them all do the calling for me. By the sounds of the sick birds they were trying to imitate, I thought I had a good chance at them scaring something my way. Sure enough, about 45 minutes after shooting light I hear birds working their way towards me under thick cover. Turned out to be a small jake and 3 hens so I let him go. It was 5 minutes later that I hear some hunters working their way down the hill behind me and they set up 50 yards behind me. I decided to live to hunt another day and got my gear together and walked out. Even after all the BS I decided to be considerate and try to be stealthy on the way out. After I get up and clear of my cover, I see the early bird dude making rounds around "his" tree. This guy must have thought he was hunting blind turkeys. I make a b-line to the truck, say adios to the boys and make a mad dash to the hill to one of my spots that I had scouted up there. Someone was already there so I headed home and was in the shower by 1000. Needless to say, it was not a fun opener for me. The only good part of the day was my little man's baseball game. Go Parkview Rangers!!!
