If looking into bolt action 17 hmr rifles.. I really like the ruger 77/17.. Any opinions or experiences with these rifles or other brands in this caliber??

Re: .17 hmr rifles..

The .17 HMR is not a good choice for yotes but other than that they are alot of fun. I bet this sort of talk about the 17 HMR will go on for a week.

I have a Savage and love the little thing. I was hitting plates at 200 yards with it a couple of weeks ago.

She shoots awesome she was pretty darn inexpensive and I popped a groundhog with her and that ballistic tip ripped a pretty nice hole in it.

Re: .17 hmr rifles..

One drawback with this round is the gooberment has banned lead in Condor areas. This will be coming soon in the whole state I think. There are no lead free alternatives at this time for the 17hmr or 22.

I have the .17 Savage. It takes down Jack's and cottontails with ease, love this rifle.

So are the .17 and 22's going to be outlawed in the whole state?

Re: .17 hmr rifles..

i've had a savage model 93 in .17hmr for several years now. Not the nicest made gun in the world but overall i love to shoot the thing. it shoots dimes at 100yds with an inexpensive BSA illuminated reticle scope...even after putting 1000 rounds through it. The action is smooth but the detatchable magazine mechanism and stock trigger are not pleasant. The ruger 77/17 feels like a piece of artwork compared to the savage but costs twice as much.

i personally would not spend that much on a rimfire. A ruger 77/22hornet would be worth the money in my book, if you want to throw a little more energy at your targets.

Also look at the Marlin model 883. ii have one in 22wrm and love it. It also shoots dimes and wears an inexpensive BSA illuminated scope for hunting fox at night.
