| Only in California...
I just read in today's paper that hundreds of Roosevelt elk and Kaibab mule deer will be needlessly slaughtered over the next four years on Santa Rosa Island. A law that gave the animals a stay of execution last year was repealed on Monday paving the way for 1,100 animals to be executed.
Leading the charge were our two bitch senators (Feinstein and Boxer) who patted themselves on the back for putting an end to big game hunting on the island.
What the senators failed to disclose was the hunting concession on the island was set to close by 2011 anyway giving the public full access to the island year round. The families that once owned the island and run the hunting operation had already agreed to begin removing the animals starting next year and to have all of the animals, which have been on the island since the 1920's, off of the island by 2011.
It would seem that the two senators feel it would be better to have all of those deer and elk exterminated than to be removed from the island.
Additionally, some of you may be aware of a new law that was just passed requiring the use of "non-toxic" bullets to be used in both high powered centerfire rifle cartridges as well as small rimfire cartridges, used within the range of the California Condor, which runs from central California to the mexican border. Similar to waterfowl we will now be required to shoot steel or some other hybrid if we want to take elk, deer, wild boar , or even rabbits and squirrels within that range. The days of the lead Nosler Partition in most of California are over.
Where will it end? Hunting in California is more endangered than the Condors themselves...
My rant is over...

SAVE THE CONDORS
Kill the Elk and Deer
Does this make sense?
Dont they realize how much money those Deer and Elk could bring?
They must not. Or they would quickly capitalize on that.
Poor stupid politicians.

I'd like to say that I'm surprised but I'm not even close. Sounds like business as usual for this state.
The same people that want to destroy those elk and deer are almost certainly the same ones who are for protecting other critters, like Mountain Lion. I don't know how they rationalize that so that it makes any kind of sense to themselves.
The only way that it does to me is that it is an agenda with an overall anti-hunting bias. Gee, ya think? That also happens to dovetail very nicely with their views on personal firearm ownership. What a wierd coincidence.

The reason why they are eliminating the herds is because there are numerous endagered plants and animals on Santa Rosa that are being damaged or destroyed by the elk and deer herds. They are trying to get Santa Rosa back to its natural state. DFG supports this and it was the courts not our senators that pushed for this.

Elk have been successfully relocated from different parts of the country to bolster specific, existing herds many times over the years so I don't see why that couldn't happen in this case, especially if it was not going to be on the State's dime.
