He shot his antelope but didn't see that there was another antelope right behind his.
The bullet passed through the intended animal, killing it, but it also hit the one behind it, killing it too. He was using a .340 Weatherby and it still had plenty left over after knocking down the first one to knock the other one down as well.
He realized his mistake when he walked up on his target and about shit a brick. He only had one tag and didn't want to take the first one and just leave the 2nd one lay and hope to get away with it.
He let them both lay were they fell, called a game warden, and explained what happened. The warden drives out to the scene while my buddy waits for him. Once the warden got there he could see that it was an honest mistake and ended up not writing Charlie a ticket.
That was CO, in CA things may be different.

I had a bet with a friend when I was a teen and even more stupid that I could kill a deer with just my hands.
No time limits, no buck/doe restrictions.. just no weapons.
My first idea was to jump on one from above, that turned out to be a joke. My next plan was to jump out of the truck at night and tackle one on the side of the road..equally as funny...but I got close a few times (to getting my ass kicked )
I was walking a fence line a year or so later and a buck was caught up in a barbed wire fence. Here was my chance. The adrenalin was pumpin, I was on my game and just had to figure out how to go in for the kill...
As I got close to this dude he completey freaks out and frees himself, just for a split second he faces me before taking off, thats when I realized I'd lost the bet.
On my best fired up, teenage testosterone filled day I could tell I was no match for that guy when it came right down to it.
Sure was a rush though!
Oh, my "reason" ? Sheer stupidity

Shoot the strongest one and screw the weakest one as you use a hacksaw to cut off the antlers to free up dinner

What better shot could he have taken? Looked like a heart shot the way it gushed and it looked like the deer died in seconds. Quote:

Hmmm. That is a tough call. On one hand, there is nothing "artificial" about the situation as far as pen raised deer, drugged deer, etc... On the other hand, its not exactly spot and stalk or shooting one from a tree stand either. They are clearly locked up and unable to escape so its kind of like shooting one that is tied up.
Unless it was an absolute MONSTER of a deer, I think I'd pass. Not sure I'd shoot the monster either but I could only honestly say that with 100% certainty if I was placed in the situation and found out for myself.
That said, I got no beef with the guy who flung the arrow. He just happened on something that occurs in nature and decided to take the shot. Freaky for sure but not artificial.
Also, that shot looked a little high for a heart shot. Maybe he got the top of the heart. That thing bleed like he center punched it. Of course, that things blood was probably pumping really good from the fight so a pin prick would have caused a gusher.

If you had 2 tags it would be ok.
I don't think I would shoot but would stay around to see if they could get out of that situation. If they couldn't, I would at least put one out of it's misery and try and free the other. It would be so exhausted trying to get free I don't think I would be in any danger. They wouldn't be going anywhere so you would have time to make a plan or get some help.

| Re: Okay ok here is the story on the Elk. Elk Tangle - Central Nevada . It's not all checking hunting and fishing licenses. Sometimes the issues are bigger. Like when a Nevada game warden was Handed the chore of figuring out how to separate two bull elk who locked horns while sparring and couldn't untangle them. The saga began Nov. 21 when a rancher in Reese River Valley spotted the two elk. By the following day, the animals were gone and the rancher assumed they had separated. A week later, according to Nevada Division of Wildlife biologist Tom Donham, the rancher was out looking for some of his cows and saw the elk again. This time, he called the wildlife department and Donham, game warden Brian Eller and Bureau of Land Management wildlife biologist Bryson Code headed out to see what they could do. When they reached Indian Valley , south of Austin , it was Nov. 29, one week after the elk were first seen. When we arrived where the rancher had last seen them, we found them pretty quickly. They were both lying on the ground and one of them was in a very uncomfortable looking position with his head directly above the others head and his nose pointing straight up to the sky,' Donham said. Eller said he wondered if they had survived their ordeal Once we found out they were alive, I was hoping they couldn't move and would stay where they were. That didn't happen. When they ran off, I was hoping that they could not go very far. That didn't happen either,' he said. The elk may have been sparring at the outset, but Donham and Eller say they used teamwork to run for nearly a mile to evade the newcomers. 'It looked like they had been doing it all their lives; serious cooperation if I've ever seen it,' Donham said. After two unsuccessful attempts, Donham was able to get a tranquilizer dart into one of the elk. With one down, the other could not run, but was also partially tranquilized in order to Eller and Code helped hold the elk down while Donham used a hand saw to remove part of an antler off one of them. As soon as they were apart, the bull that hadn't gotten a full dose jumped to his feet and Bryson, Brian and I quickly gave him all the room he wanted. He went off about 30 yards and lay down for about 10 minutes before finally walking up the hill and over the ridge, none the worse for wear' Donham said. The other elk was treated with antibiotics and eventually walked off as well after the tranquilizer had worn off. If these two bulls had not been discovered, and we never got the call, they more than likely would have both died. Watching the bulls walk away, and knowing that we likely saved them from a slow death was definitely one of those moments that makes this job rewarding.

I'da shot one with my A22 tag, then hauled ass to the DFG office and bought another tag, hauled ass back up the hill and shot the other one. Bingo bango, filled my two tags bitches.
Seriously, I don't know what I'd do. I do think I'd feel ethically obligated to try to help some way. If that meant shooting one, so the survivor could then be rescued more easily, that is probably what I'd do.
That shot was primo. Double lung and probably cut the main cardio pulmonary artery off the top of the heart. I recently killed a pig the same way, big time gusher.
