Re: Would you shoot?

Guys,

Disclaimer:I've never hunted deer.

IMHO if I were a deer hunter and came across two bucks locked up I would shoot the weaker of the two and set the other free, some how.

A farmer I know from Saskatchewan came across this same situation, he has a hack saw in his truck, he cut one of the racks and freed the two bucks.

This actually happened to my friend Charlie in CO when he was antelope hunting. He shot his antelope but didn't see that there was another antelope right behind his.

The bullet passed through the intended animal, killing it, but it also hit the one behind it, killing it too. He was using a .340 Weatherby and it still had plenty left over after knocking down the first one to knock the other one down as well.

He realized his mistake when he walked up on his target and about shit a brick. He only had one tag and didn't want to take the first one and just leave the 2nd one lay and hope to get away with it.

He let them both lay were they fell, called a game warden, and explained what happened. The warden drives out to the scene while my buddy waits for him. Once the warden got there he could see that it was an honest mistake and ended up not writing Charlie a ticket.

That was CO, in CA things may be different.

Looks like it went right where it's supposed to go to me... Unless you're being sarcastic.

BTW, that would have been an easy blood trail to follow. Nice gusher.

Jesus Matt, thanks for that story, I handn't heard it. Thats awesome.

I had a bet with a friend when I was a teen and even more stupid that I could kill a deer with just my hands.

No time limits, no buck/doe restrictions.. just no weapons.

My first idea was to jump on one from above, that turned out to be a joke. My next plan was to jump out of the truck at night and tackle one on the side of the road..equally as funny...but I got close a few times (to getting my ass kicked )

I was walking a fence line a year or so later and a buck was caught up in a barbed wire fence. Here was my chance. The adrenalin was pumpin, I was on my game and just had to figure out how to go in for the kill...

As I got close to this dude he completey freaks out and frees himself, just for a split second he faces me before taking off, thats when I realized I'd lost the bet.

On my best fired up, teenage testosterone filled day I could tell I was no match for that guy when it came right down to it.

Sure was a rush though!

Oh, my "reason" ? Sheer stupidity

Shoot the strongest one and screw the weakest one as you use a hacksaw to cut off the antlers to free up dinner

What better shot could he have taken? Looked like a heart shot the way it gushed and it looked like the deer died in seconds.

Re: Would you shoot?

Hmmm. That is a tough call. On one hand, there is nothing "artificial" about the situation as far as pen raised deer, drugged deer, etc... On the other hand, its not exactly spot and stalk or shooting one from a tree stand either. They are clearly locked up and unable to escape so its kind of like shooting one that is tied up.

Unless it was an absolute MONSTER of a deer, I think I'd pass. Not sure I'd shoot the monster either but I could only honestly say that with 100% certainty if I was placed in the situation and found out for myself.

That said, I got no beef with the guy who flung the arrow. He just happened on something that occurs in nature and decided to take the shot. Freaky for sure but not artificial.

Also, that shot looked a little high for a heart shot. Maybe he got the top of the heart. That thing bleed like he center punched it. Of course, that things blood was probably pumping really good from the fight so a pin prick would have caused a gusher.
