What is the Current Calif. law for purchasing a firearm from a private party? I know you have to go through a licensed gun dealer, but do I as a buyer have to take a safety course? It's a little 22 rifle. I am X military if that helps. Thanks for anybodys help, and Happy Holidays. makomiko

No registration required for long guns.

There is no safety course required for long guns. Registration is not required for long guns because the Dealer Record of Sale (DROS) done at the FFL dealer does not record long guns serial numbers.
To receive (buy, gift, etc) a handgun the new owner must have a valid Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC). The DROS for handguns contains the make model and serial number of the hand guns that are transferred.

Okay, I knew there was no safety course requirement, but I thought you still needed to register any firearm.....

The FBI keeps these transactions forever. and the local, county, state and federal PD's can get this in a moment. So even though they say it's not registered, it is.

I just registered a 22 rifle last Sunday. Private party sale. Both buyer and seller fill out seperate forms. I have to wait 10 days to pick up the firearm. You must have a lock, and the receipt for the lock can not be over 30 days old....makomiko

If you have a safe bring the make and model and you won't have to buy a lock.
