| Re: Any d16 kills today
Yeah yeah yeah. Here's the story. I had a G-13 doe tag. Mr Hawk Eye (aka El Toro) and I hit his secret spot. He glasses up two deer at no less than 2 miles away. I'm not shitting you. We put the stalk on them and get there and it takes another 30 minutes before Nate locates them again. They are casually walking up a dirt road that goes by this guys house. We watch them go up to a ridge in some heavy cover and bed down. We walk up the road and Nate goes to the guys trailer/camp to ask if we can pass by on his little lot to go after the deer. Turns out the guy is standing outside butt ass naked. No shit. He mulls it over for about 5 seconds and says sure. We haul ass up the road before a scene from Deliverance unfolds. Get to the top of the ridge and jump the deer out of the brush about 15 yards from us, no shot. I haul ass through the brush and come to a ridge and down in the bottom are the 4 deer, 2 fat does, a fawn and a little spork buck all bunched up around a little oak. I get out my shooting sticks, take a rest and let one rip. Nothing. The doe I shot at didn't even flinch. Try again and I thought I smoked her. I thought I saw her buckle on the shot and move away a few yards slowly. The 3 other deer moved away from the tree and stood on a ridge about 15 yards from where they were at and just watched for another 15 seconds or so. Nate and I walked down to the little tree and sure as shit, right when we got there, the fucker bolts. No shot. No blood, no hair, no nothing so I guess that was clean miss #2. I can smoke an antelope facing me square at 230 yards in a 20 mph Wyoming cross wind but I can't hit a fucking doe at 115 standing still with no wind. She was down at a pretty good angle and I should have aimed lower I guess. I think the steepness of the shot and the fact that I'm zeroed in at 200 yards meant I missed high both times.
Not sure what happened. I was shooting at South Bay a few weeks ago and drilled a 1 inch group at 200 yards. Must have been doe fever (-;
Anyhow, the hunting part was great. Awesome glassing, awesome country, awesome stalk. The shooting part was shitty.
Thanks Nate for dragging me along. Next time.
