I am trying to get back into hunting. I haven't gone since I was in the Navy. What shotgun do you think is a good gun to buy? I was thinking of going with the Remington 870 water fowl. I am open to suggestions. |

That is a great gun to start with. You might also look into a Benelli Nova. Both good guns and cheap.

| Re: Shotgun I'll second the 870 express. Its is fairly inexpensive and functions fine even has choke tubes. The Nova is OK, I have one I use for 3.5" shells only. I do find the pump difficult for me to grip and as sdhunter would say, it just plain ugly. |

870, I still hunt with mine. It kills it all. Very good choice and great value.

Can't go wrong with the 870 if you're looking for a solid, all-purpose shotgun. If you're going to be only doing certain types of hunting; we'd need more info as well as your price range, preference (if any) as to pump, auto, O/U, etc.

I am trained with the 870. I like a pump but as a kid I had a DBL BRL 20ga. I would like to go dove, duck and turkey hunting. Big game is a different gun, different post but I have one in mind. As a teenager I use to hunt with a Ithica 12ga pump. I am not willing to pay for a Benelli.....right now.

Ohhhhh SNEEEEKEE! It's a Benelli Super Black Eagle II or an SBE II. Yep, that would be a good gun if he was lookin' to spend $1200 on his first scattergun.
Ya sure ya gotta have a pump gun? I'm not much of a pump gun guy but I'd recommend the Benelli Nova, too. 870 is definitely old school but I think the Benelli Nova is taking its place. They can take incredible abuse and they are good, fast cycling, shooters.
Personally, I'd get an autoloader like a Beretta 391 Urika. Reasonably priced for an outstanding shotgun.

I have shot a pump my whole life but have found that for waterfowl hunting I shhot better and better kill ratio with a auto.Less recoil I think has a lot to do with it.I shoot a Beretta 390 but if I was to replace it ,the Benelli would be my next one.To keep expense down you might look for a used Beretta.Tom
