| Getting a new rifle, any suggestions?
Nice to see there's a spot for hunting here, too. Anyways, I'm looking to get a new 30-06 bolt action. Right now I have my eyes on the new Ruger M77 Hawkeye, reasonable at only $600ish. So I might go for that one.
On the other hand, I'm open to any suggestions on other rifles, new or used. And can anyone point me towards some gun shops in the San Diego area BESIDES the El Cajon Gun Exchange? Thanks!

have you look into any savage 10fp series or 12 series? They make excellent rifles and super accurate out of the box. i buy my guns online at impactguns.com and you can save big money. Beside Bill Ruger can take all his guns and shove them up his ass. IMHO,
good luck

Rugers are nice rifles, but (pun intended) hit or miss on accuracy due to cheap barrels. +1 for Savages. Accuracy out of the box. With good reloads, all my Savages shoot sub MOA and my .223's shoot 1/4". For $600.00 you could have a Savage topped with a scope ready to shoot. Of course, you can't go wrong with a Rem 700 either.

I would go with a remington 700. If you ever want to upgrade easiest gun to work on due to availability of parts. I would definitely buy a new one. You don't know how the bore was cleaned, whether or not it was broken in properly or how much throat erosion the gun has.

Remington just upgraded their 710 package (722?). Comes with scope mounted at a very reasonable price and all reports are that it shoots well. This months American Hunter has an article on it. A lot of gun for the money.

| Re: Getting a new rifle, any suggestions? Go see Rick at La Mesa Collectables. Used and New. For 30-06, Savage is your best bet. Accurate out of the box, and inexpensive. Easy to work on. Get synthetic, no hassles.

Since Winchester quit making the model 70, I would go with the Remington 700. Great action. If your ok with used, I'd look for a pre-64 model 70. Awesome action, and if it doesn't shoot, you can always have it re-barreled, but my money would be on it to shoot.
For the money, I have to agree with an earlier post. Savage makes a very good rifle. Years ago, they didn't have a great reputation, but most other manufacturers also went through a stage where they were producing on the cheap. Savage has come around. Even though I don't own one, I know several people who do, and they are usually amazed at the accuracy.
Good luck and let us know what you decide and how it works out. 30-06 is an awesome all around cal.

The easiest gun in the world to upgrade is the Savage, barrel changes, bolthead changes, etc. can all be done at home. No gunsmith required.
It's hard to beat their accuracy out of the box also. I own eight different brands of rifles, with three Savages that I also have two extra barrels for, effectively making five different rifles.
Bill Ruger is dead and the Ruger family are no longer the majority owners of Ruger firearms.

DO NOT GET A RUGER! Get a remington 700 and you will be happy. I do not own any savages but have friends that do and they shoot good to. As for a good gun shop that wont be a "Dick" to you like El Cajon Gun Exchange..... Go see Rick at La Mesa Collectibles (619)462-9291 and you wont get the run around like at other shops.

I have heard great things from very reliable people about Savages. Have never owned one myself. What the other guys said is very consistent with the reports I have been hearing for many years.
I am a Remington rifle guy all the way, based upon the advice of the guys who taught me about guns and shooting. I don't think you can go wrong with a Remington.
Hope you get a good gun that you are happy with.

Savages are great for the money, but the Stock Triggers suck big time. You can change them out for $100 if you can do it yourself...gunsmith more $$$..Then your at the cost of the remington, which has more options for stocks, scope bases, triggers, trigger guards etc....You options are endless.
Remington 700 is the way to go in my opinion. Awesome trigger than can be tuned, by downloading the instructions of the net... Easily get a 3lb trigger. Breaks clean and sharp.
Accurracy- should be getting MOA out of the box, you might have to play around with different ammo. If you reload, you can get most remingtons to shoot .75MOA, some down to .5MOA. Pending the caliber...
30/06 Is a great round. Not the most accurate, but very good. i would consider the 300 WSM, if you using it for North America Game. The Shoulder of the 300 WSM Case promotes better accuracy over the 30/06 case...If you get into reloading you will learn this stuff...
If you really want an accurate rifle...Then find a good gunsmith and buy a rifle for about $1800-2K...You will get down to .25MOA or better... My Hunting Rifle is a Rem 700 Action, Mike Rock 22" Fluted Barrel, HS Precision Stock, in 308...Its a one holer at 100yds. Shot a Wild Hog in the eye at 175yds several years ago.
Good luck with regardless.
