Re: West Nile

No problems out here. Plenty of crows. I saw a sheeeetload of jays yesterday while scouting.
I was/am more worried about ducks and geese contracting/spreading it.

On another note...
I found a new area yesterday...I'm naming "The Intersection" 5 runways crossing at one point with a tree close, furthest shot, 20 yds max. Pretty thick area, should be good morning and/or evening.
Found another spot but will have to make sure I'm not around anyones tree stands as I've not hunted the area......yet.

Re: West Nile

You'd never find this one. It's in a ravine.

I've got a new 20' ladder stand in my garage waiting to find its new home. Call me when you want to put it up!

Re: West Nile

West nile is not a problem right now. But once the entire mosquito population becomes infected... it will be. When that happens... every time you get bit by a mosquito. You will be contracting the West Nile. Hopefully by the time that happens. They will come up with a vaccine or solution.

BTW not all birds are effected by West Nile. Crows die from it. But the House Sparrow can be bit by the infected mosquitoes and be unaffected.
I do not know the situation with the Turkey. But hopefully they too are resistant.

You can help dramatically hinder the progression of West Nile! Most of the mosquitoes come from stagnated water in peoples back yards! Do not leave buckets of water or any unmaintained pools. About 1-3mm of water is enough for them to develop in. These are major breeding grounds for the mosquitoes.

Here is some information on West Nile directly from my professors notes.
West Nile Virus
Neuropathogen
Human, equine & avian
1st Isolated
West Nile Province of Uganda 1937

West Nile Virus
ASM News Vol.71, #7&8, 2005
West Nile virus is here to stay
Over 1 million people infected
7,000 people w/ severe neurological symptoms
Surprisingly HIV patients are not at greater risk
Even though transplant & immunosuppressed are

West Nile Virus
Carried by mosquitoes to horses, birds and people
Does not transmit human to human
Since 1999
Started in New York & spread across US
<1% of infected people develop severe symptoms
Most serious in people over 50 w/ weakened immunity
Symptoms
Asymptomatic flu-like – meningitis/encephalitis
Vaccine
Human testing began 2003

West Nile Virus
ASM News Vol.71, #7&8, 2005

West Nile virus is here to stay
Over 1,000,000 people infected
13% symptoms present like Polio
Others look like Parkinson’s Disease
7,000 people w/ severe neurological symptoms
664 fatalities
250,000 milder cases
Prolonged fatigue & weakness
Surprisingly HIV patients are not at greater risk
Even though transplant & immunosuppressed pts. are
58 species of mosquitoes carry it
300 species of birds harbor it
House sparrow is driving the epidemic
They don’t die from WNV and they exist in high numbers

Detecting the Arrival of
West Nile Virus
Researchers drew blood from 2,000 chickens
Chickens are immune to the virus
Can infect 75 species of birds
Crows harbor it the most
Look for antibody production as an indicator of its arrival to an area

Fighting Vector-Borne Disease
Chemistry
Drugs; prophylactic-therapeutic-insecticides
Immunity
Vaccines
Ecology
Environmental management
Behavioral Science
Personal protection
Genetics
Breed non-infected mosquito w/ infected
Transgenesis
Make gene that reduces transmission rate insert into vector or its eggs
Introduce modified vector into the wild
Gene transfers vertically
