Re: Food Plots?

Believe me, I've thought about it before.

Too many stands in that area already. I saw 6 portables last year. I've seen more "stalking" hunters in that area last year than deer.

I only have 49 stands now, someone ripped one off last season. I want to put at least 2 more up soon. I want to check out a couple more spots.

Shit Tim, you're 2 streets from me, call me next time you go up. I've been scouting a few new areas I haven't been in a while and seeing some sign but nothing to write home about. Looks like the trees are starting to get leaves on them. Have you seen the tiny pinky tracks?

4 months is going to get here quick.

I'll PM you my cell # and you do the same. If you remember at the end of last year I found a group of five deer... well I did some scouting of that exact area and I could see one nice deer bedded down just above on a ridge. So I snuck in early Sunday morning and hung a stand below the ridge on a well used trail. Yes the trees are showing some leaves already.

Well, to no surprise it is very dry up there. There's some sparse new bitterbrush growing but not much else. This is half the reason for my food plot question. It's not that I want to do it just to harvest a deer for myself , but to help what I consider to be a weak habitat system for deer survival. We all know that there are some marshy areas up there that If planted properly could provide food for deer year around.
Maybe I'm overthinking it here but just looking for a way to give something back.

By the way, I've never seen so much trash up there in my life!

Re: Food Plots?

Yeah, the snow bunnies screw things up there every year. I took 4 smashed up sleds and numerous trash bags out with me last time up there.

Nate, It looks like they did a controled burn close to the area you guys hunted last year. I'm still seeing acorns on the ground in the areas I have looked at. The smaller brush already have leaves on them. I hope we get a few more showers. It's going to be very dry up there if we don't.... I mean cancel rifle season dry.

I have already poked around both laguna & palomar, although it is a big time drought year the mountains did get more rain than we got down here, still way short of normal but not bad, big laguna lake is twice it's size from last year at this time. snow melt/rain ? It is fairly green right now, but still real dry (crunchy) typical luguna. the new growth from the fires looks real healthy and a foot taller, plenty of good forage there, but the acorn production on the oaks looks slim, the oaks on palomar are loaded with water everywere.
found promising fresh sign on both hills, even kicked out a few does.
