Supply and demand. Last I checked, we are still a country with an economic system based on capitalism. If you think it is rediculous, don't pay it. Obviously there are plenty of people out there that think it is perfectly reasonable.

Yes it is supply and demand. The problem is the lack of public land to actually hunt on. I'm speaking from the perspective of a duck hunter as I don't do much other hunting. Other than some of the rivers in CA you have very little areas to hunt public land that aren't in the refuge system. Hunting private land is almost out of the question as it is almost all leased out to clubs or guides. You have to pay to play nowadays. Hunting will become a rich man's sport in the near future.

Marcus, unfortunately that is sad but true. Fortunately, with deer at least, there is still public land left that is pretty accessible for deer hunting. You just really have to work at it and hunt harder than the next guy. It aint easy and any animal taken is a true trophy, regardless of size.
With pigs, it is the unfortunate reality that they thrive mainly on private land because that is where the food and water is. Pinch your pennies and you can still go on a great hunt for not all that much dough.
It sucks, but there are only two things you can do about it. Sit at home and complain, or get out there, hunt hard and make it happen.

Is it possible that in the near future fisherman will have to purchase tags for highly sought after species such as white sea bass, halibut, tuna and yellowtail? I can see the area around Catalina being managed by an organization that promotes healthy stocks by making sure that only a small amount of the right size fish are taken at a given time of the year and requiring tags for these fish. It's scary, but not completely nuts.

I don't think you need to spend thousands to hunt pigs on private property, but deer are a different story. Most guides charge in the nieghborhood of $400 to $500 for a 2 day hunt. That is a per pig price. Some landowners will give you access to their land for a self guided hunt for around $400 per pig. I know of one such operation in Hollister. You can also get creative and barter for private land access. One such land owner with 4,ooo acres of pristine pig habitat lets me have access to shoot pigs because I gave him a 217lb yellowfin I caught at the Hurricane bank. Yep, drove that frozen fucker up there to seal the deal. Most of these landowners that I have met think the pigs are a nuisance and tear up water lines, livestock tanks, and root everything up. For some reason the deer are more emotional for some of them and they do not want them shot.
I have killed more hogs than I can count and have only "paid" twice...once at Cedar Canyon ($500) and once (first hog hunt) with Tom Willoughby in Paso Robles...
Check out the photo's of some of the hogs I have killed on the cheap on my thread "Hog Hunting in Central California". It can be done...
