For steep country, you can't do much better than a pair of Meindls. I've had them all and when you are carrying a pack and/or need support, Meindls are awesome. I have the Cabela's Denali, made by Meindl.
Also very good, but a bit more expensive, are the Lowa line. The Tibet and the Sheep Hunter. Just depends on how much insulation (if any) you want.
Neither of these brands are for the casual hunter who hikes at most a 1/2 mile throughout the day. These are hard core. They are rigid and supportive and made for serious hiking.
Boots are not something you should ever try to skimp on. You are much better off with a cheap rifle and the best boots money can buy than you are the other way around. Your feet will make or break your hunt. Wilderness hunting, especially with a pack, is no place for cheap boots. My hunting time is far too important to wear junk boots.

I have about a dozen pairs of boots but these are the ones I use most frequently:
For hardcore hiking/hunting in the steep/rocky/talus/rough shit I wear a pair of old school uninsulated One Sport Moraine's. They are made by Montrail these days. Pure hiking boots. The uppers have several stitched up patches and the soles are pretty worn so I'm gonna get them re-soled soon. That's how much I like them.
For general hunting I normally wear a pair of high-topped leather Rocky's with a bob sole. I've worn them anywhere from CO mountain snow to WY plains to WA pheasant hunting. They have some insulate in them and are comfortable. They aren't my favorite if I'm walking in really steep terrain though. They do have a redneck roper tassle near the toe and I like that.
If it's cold or the snow is thicker I wear a pair of synthetic Redhead boots with gore-tex and more insulate. They have a bob sole and are light so they're pretty quiet but they don't have much support if you're carrying a load.
Bear in mind if you decide to buy a pair of leather boots you will need to spend some time breaking them in before you hit the hills or you will be sorry. I'm not talking about just walking around the neighborhood, but taking several long dayhikes in them. Also for leather, applying Snowseal to them isn't a bad idea either. I tend to prefer leather boots because they are more durable and stand up better to steeper terrain and heavier loads.

I just got done putting a couple miles on my pair of meindels and they kick ass. My bro would know for sure but I think there called the Ibex. I put roughly 80 plus miles on them in 10 days back in September on an elk hunt, no problems.
