I actually wear my issue combat boots. Good socks are as important as good boots if you ask me. Good merino wool socks like Smartwool or the new Wigwam....

Re: What Boots do you wear?

I was at REI in Chula Vista last night and they have Montrail Gore-Tex "Torre" boots on sale. They are regular priced at $150.00, marked down to $129.99, then 50% off of the $129.99 price. These are one of the most comfortable hiking boots I've ever worn. Just thought I would pass this good deal on. (I don't work for REI).

Re: What Boots do you wear?

I will second the Danner boots. I also find the insulated Rocky line of boots to be comfortable/durable as well.

Re: What Boots do you wear?

Danners hiked all over the world with them still holding up strong.

Re: What Boots do you wear?

No doubt....DANNER.

It took me years and several resolings to finally kill my first pair a long time ago. They fit like a glove up to the very end. I have 2 pair of their hunting boots now with about 3 seasons on them. They're still like new in fit. I even wear a pair of their Gortex Hikers on a daily basis. I had them for about a year when I noticed my feet were damp after being in the rain. I sent them a note and the boots and within a week I had a brand new pair delivered no charge.

Still made in the USA, too!

Re: What Boots do you wear?

I've got a set of the Danner's for the desert. When it gets cold, or serious mountain work, I have a pair of Irish Setters. Both pairs have the extra toe guard protectors and are comfortable after miles of walking....!

Re: What Boots do you wear?

For a hardcore hunting boot, I can vouch for the Meindl Denali's as well. I have put hundreds of miles on mine in some very nasty country. I can not wear them out. They are comfortable as well but my feet do begin to tire after 6-8 miles. I recently bought some Danner Pronghorns and they are very comfortable. They will be my boot for extended hikes to see if that helps my feet. I have a pair of Rocky boots as well for real cold days as they are 80-0 gram thinsulate boots. They are pretty comfortable as well but I do not see them holding up like my meindls.

Re: What Boots do you wear?

Quick synopsis that I have come up with in years of hunting and trying lots and lots of boots.

Danners (the older styles, made in USA, not the newer crap Asian ones) are a great and durable all around boot for all but the steepest and most off camber terrain. They just aren't stiff enough or have enough ankle support for real mountaineering and/orwhile carrying a heavy pack.

The old Red Wing hunting boots were great (and similar to Danners in terms of appropriate use) but I think they have gone the way of the buggy whip.

Rocky's are comfortable and fine for the weekend warrior or periodic hunter on relatively easy terrain. They won't last with hard core use. Their name is actually kind of funny as the pair I had were torn up by rocks.

Meindl and Lowa are the go-to brands for steep, rocky, and really difficult terrain. These are the boots most hard core hunters swear by. The Euros do really know how to make a mountain boot. Those Alps are steep.

For cold weather, it is hard to beat a pair of Schnees pac boots. They are warm and really well built. They are also much more supportive than a regular pac boot (like a Sorel) and are actually quite good in steep terrain. They are more like a Pac boot bred with a hiking boot.

In my experience, pretty much everything else out there is junk and won't hold up to serious use. Maybe fine for the guys whose idea of hunting is casual walking with a weapon and just being out hanging with the boys. There really isn't much else out there for truly serious hunters who hunt crowded public land and need to rely on their feet to take them where other hunters won't go.

That is just my opinion, but it's based off of lots of mistakes and bad choices in footwear.

As said before, on a hunt far from home or on a dream hunt, never ever skimp on your footwear. They are the single most important piece of equipment a hunter owns. Combine good boots with a good sock liner and smart wool sock and you'll be a happy hunter.

here's a post of mine from a 4wd forum I hang out on:

I though they were very gimicky when my brother bought them but after 3 -12 hour days of very steep & loose chukar hunting his feet were fine & mine were trashed in my conventional hunting boots. So I went ahead & picked up a pair.
They are the Fuel Injection of boots, you can tune them "on the fly" for whatever conditions you are in and can get far more pressure on the laces than with conventional laces for phenominal ankle support (great for long steep decents on loose terrain while carying 70+lbs). I've used them in all kinds of terrain and have yet to have one time (only 3-4 trips of total about 50 hours of hard use) where I regretted having them. They are a little warm in weather 85d+ with the 600g insullation but I've had them in weather around 0d in a foot of snow & my feet were comfortable the whole time.
I'm not sure how durable they are but are still in good condition. When they get too worn I'll go buy another pair at $160 without hessitation. I anticipate I'll get 4 or 5 seasons of chukar hunting (3-4 trips a season) & other misc stuff out of them no problem. I was worried about the cable failing while 3 or 4 hours from the truck but they are very well built & I carry standard laces to rig something together in case of failure. I don't think they would hold up to daily use but they are holding up much better than I had anticipated.
I love these boots!
