| Re: What Boots do you wear?
Quick synopsis that I have come up with in years of hunting and trying lots and lots of boots.
Danners (the older styles, made in USA, not the newer crap Asian ones) are a great and durable all around boot for all but the steepest and most off camber terrain. They just aren't stiff enough or have enough ankle support for real mountaineering and/orwhile carrying a heavy pack.
The old Red Wing hunting boots were great (and similar to Danners in terms of appropriate use) but I think they have gone the way of the buggy whip.
Rocky's are comfortable and fine for the weekend warrior or periodic hunter on relatively easy terrain. They won't last with hard core use. Their name is actually kind of funny as the pair I had were torn up by rocks.
Meindl and Lowa are the go-to brands for steep, rocky, and really difficult terrain. These are the boots most hard core hunters swear by. The Euros do really know how to make a mountain boot. Those Alps are steep.
For cold weather, it is hard to beat a pair of Schnees pac boots. They are warm and really well built. They are also much more supportive than a regular pac boot (like a Sorel) and are actually quite good in steep terrain. They are more like a Pac boot bred with a hiking boot.
In my experience, pretty much everything else out there is junk and won't hold up to serious use. Maybe fine for the guys whose idea of hunting is casual walking with a weapon and just being out hanging with the boys. There really isn't much else out there for truly serious hunters who hunt crowded public land and need to rely on their feet to take them where other hunters won't go.
That is just my opinion, but it's based off of lots of mistakes and bad choices in footwear.
As said before, on a hunt far from home or on a dream hunt, never ever skimp on your footwear. They are the single most important piece of equipment a hunter owns. Combine good boots with a good sock liner and smart wool sock and you'll be a happy hunter.
