| I'm looking for a rifle
Hey guys i'm looking into buying some sort of long range rifle but I don't know much about them. All i really want it for is to pop off some shots out in the desert. What should i get or where can i learn more? I'd apreciate your wisdom.

gunz Death_To_ | Well it all depends on how much money you want too spend and what you like to do in the way of shooting. For me I bought a couple of Ruger 10/22 to plink with, cheep fun but not long range. When you say long range are we talking 850 yds. +, or more like 100 to 300 yds. It all depends on what you have fun doing. So do you want to shoot at targets on a range or at some BLM land? These are the questions you must first ask yourself then some of the other guys on here can fill you in on the long range stuff. I for long range, shoot a .270 and for shorter range a .243, but the most fun is the 10/22 can shoot all day for under $20.00.
Here is a good place to look for more information, http://www.long-range.com/
Good Luck and Happy gunz gunz gunz Death_To_ Death_To_ Death_To_

Lot's of flat shooters, bigger rounds handle the wind better but you get more recoil. My favorite is a .300 win mag with 180 spirepoints. Coyote killer for sure. If you are gonna go through a lot of rounds look at a .243 or .223 type rifle with a longer barrel and some decent optics.
This can turn into a Ford/Chevy thing

Just My 2cents worth about "BLM" lands Most of the places I go Rideing Lucern,Johnson Valley,Bell mountain, ect have posted signs "Shot Gun Use only" So before you Buy A big bore Rifle 300mag, 30/06 , 222,or other look into the Use of these rifle`s ,in those area`s it would truly suck to spend the money then get a fine!

look at an SKS. Yugo models at Turners are 150$. 7.62X39mm is one of the world's most heavily manufactured rounds, being that it's the AK-47's bullet of choice. so it is very cheap to shoot. plus the SKS is relatively accurate and with 10 rounds at semi auto, it's also a fun gun to plink with

If you wanna just plick, get a Ruger 10/22.
If you want something you can shoot longer range at varmits and still plink pretty cheaply, get a .223.
If you want a hunting rifle (which you can shoot targets with as well but it can get more expensive), you need to be more specific about what you will be hunting. A .270 is a great all around caliber for most deer sized and smaller game. The 30-06 and .300 Win Mag will handle the deer plus larger game as well. There are all kinds of caliber rifles and everyone has a favorite and a purpose.

To qualify my statements. Born and Raised in Texas, killed more that 7500 white tail deer and several thousand hogs.
Won the Varmint Match a couple years ago at Pala.
Long Range, starts at 750yds out to 2500. To 2500yds I use a 338 Lapua Mag. 1500 yds, 300win mag, to 900 yds 308...there are various other cartridges, but ammo is costly.
100-300yds.
My best recommendations is a Rem 700 VS 308 $650. Typically shoots sub MOA. Will hold is value, very easy to accurize. 308 ammo is everywere and very cheap. Triggers are easy to tune. Stay away from Ruger, Browning. Savage or FN is something to consider, let expensive, but you get what you pay for.
Then the next questions will be Optics,,,a decent Scope will cost twice as much as your rifle.....if money is tight. Buy a Tasco Super Sniper 10X from SWFA for $299.
Once you put about several thousands rounds through it, you might know how to shoot, then it may be time to upgrade.
Let me know if you have any further questions

Right around the corner from the King Ranch...Lived All over South Texas, spent some time in Uvalde.
Graduated High School in Sabinal Texas.
Grew up learning to shoot off either shoulder...Didnt matter if I was the driver or the passenger.
When I was kid, I could not figure out why people bought meat at grocery stores. I thought they must be to poor to own guns...
Also, do you have any contacts at the King Ranch. My Bro In Law is one of there outfitters. Now he is a Taxidermist and does alot of work for Wayne Perry. Also you might want to let them now that one of there Biggest Customers, Steve Shepard was killed in Dozer Accident....
Me, I was never RIch enough to hunt on the King Ranch. $5000 for 8 point White Tail is too rich for my blood. Plus, horns dont chew to well. Hard on your teeth. I personally prefer about a 2 yr old doe.
Since you grew up on one of the first Ranchs in Texas to High Fence. Then you will completely understand what Culling is...Thats how you can rack up killing alot of deer in a short period of time.
Love to talk more if you want to.

.223 if all you are going to do is shoot targets at that range, or pop some varmits.
If you want to do the same and add some big game in there, I'd second the recommendation for the .308. Ammo is cheap and recoil is light. Surplus ammo is always an option for plinking. With good quality ammo, elk are well within its limitations.
Savage is well known for out of the box accuracy. It won't be much to look at but it should shoot well. All of the major brands these days are pretty good. It really comes down to personal preference. Buy what you like. You may want to save a little extra for a trigger job too. Most factory guns come off the shelves with triggers that are way too stiff to really shoot accurately. An expoxy bedding job will complete the package. Then spend some dough on a scope, don't skimp. You don't need to mortgage the home but spend at least a couple hundred bucks. A weapon is only as good as its sights.
