Re: Turkey Tune-up

I'll see ya there....wear some swag.

Chuam - 12 guage with full or better choke, simple call or two and some camo. Public land maps, gps and a little time in the area will do it. You're in LA? I hear there are some birds in Berdo. This Tune UP is very helpful as far as info goes not to mention some good raffles.

There is still enough water/greenery out there that the birds are not concentrated around ponds which are usually on private land. The public lands are holding birds as last year did.

Fuck, I totally forgot about this. My wife has some cooking thing to go to with a bunch of women at 10 am so I got the rugrat.

Do most people hunt around Lake Sutherland or do they hunt them on other public land? I wish I could go cause I don't know jack about hunting turkeys.

Re: Turkey Tune-up

Most of the land immediately around Sutherland that is public is mostly too thick with brush. If you get the USDF map and look around Pamo Valley there are areas that hold birds but you will have to park and walk. I forget the trail name but it heads to the old quartz mine. There are areas along Black Canyon Rd. but watch out you don't trespass on any of the reservations, their lands crisscross the road. Also down Eagle Peak Rd. in Julian there are good public lands holding birds. All of these areas are crowded with hunters in the beginning of the season but they will thin out and the birds will settle down. I don't hunt public lands the first two weeks unless it's the middle of the week.

Turkey hunting holds all the fun of scout, spot, stalk and call of big game but with way less work once you make the kill.

Also, take your everyday 12 ga. shotgun add a Cabella's Hevi-Shot choke tube (cheap/good) in extra full and add a box of Remmington hevi-shot #5 (not cheap/very good) in the biggest load your shotgun will handle and you have deadly ammo for 3 years or you can go crazy and break the bank as turkey hunting is gadget friendly.

Re: Turkey Tune-up

The day was a success. I almost had the archery shoot, missed by 1/8" and lost to a woman!

Sat in the hot sun for an hour watching everyone else win cool shit. Finally the drawing for the hunt started. At the last minute I was surprised to hear my name called. I got #21 out of 22 spots.

Actually, one of the last ones they gave out looked like an extra small or something. Luckily, the guy who won it was pretty small......
