Time Flys

My God can't believe how fast time has gone by.
I moved to North Idaho in 1968, I was sales manager to an Automatic high speed ammo loading Co. I sold seven of them to Speer Inc of Lewiston Idaho, When I went there to set them up Ray Speer made me a proposition I could not turn down. We moved to Lewiston and I loved it. Working as ammunition's Mgr, and helping to write the reloading Manuel.
Speer Inc. was a great place to work. We would get a week off to hunt Elk not counted as vacation time. My first hunt I killed a sex point bull. Had the head mounted. The next year I was ready, as I had three horses a truck and belonged to the best elk camp in Idaho. I did eleven hunts and killed nine elk, The last three with Black Powder. All three one shot kills. Fun Times.
When Speer sold out to CCI I went to Grand Island Nb. and went to work for Hornaday Bullets. I shot Pheasants all the time and Steve Hornaday and I would shoot as much as three hundred prairie dogs at a setting. The ranchers would ask us to hunt them.
From there I went to work for Zero Bullets in Cullman Alabama. Was not there very long as I needed to get back the the North West.
I moved back to Lewiston and started my bullet CO. Went broke and moved to Bonners Ferry Idaho. I bought a small ranch had Sheep and horses. Great Elk Deer and Bear. I am to old to hunt now but love to read and dream.
Thats when I started fishing and got my CG license. and started chartering Big Rainbow trout. I have two I caught mounted on my wall that went over 25# .
I still fish and my wife just caught a 33.5 WSB this Summer. High in the DWYC and Dana Anglers for woman. She can shoot the eye out of a deer at a hundred yards. I will tell you of her shooting the head off Grouse with a 30/30 another time. I have had a full fun packed life I'm 77 young now and ready for another 100,000.

Jim!

I remember in school we were allowed to have days off to go hunting! Oh my goodness!

Your story is wonderful!
I hope to meet you someday!

I love hunting. It looks like I will get a deer hunt in while I am in Idaho next week. I am so excited!. In the middle of flyfishing I am not sure how I will work this out, but we will!

Re: Time Flys

Wow Jim. You have quite the resume. The Interloct has long since been one of my favorite bullets. Must have been great to have an endless supply of ammo.

We would fire 40,000 to 80,000 rounds getting the right stuff for thr reloading books.
Also had the honor of working with some of the best, Ray Speer,Vernon Speer, Dave Andrews and Jack OConners, and a lot more

Re: Time Flys

Oconnor must have been in there picking up some more 130's for his beloved .270. Winchester owes that man a debt of gratitude. I've certainly heard the name Applegate but know nothing more than name recognition. What's his story?

Re: Time Flys

One of the guys that I hunted with was a OConnor fan. The 270 was all he would hunt with. He had a lot of one shot kills with that rifle.
I was shooting a 308 Norma Mag at that time. I then got into Black Powder. I used a Hawkins 45 and got caught by the F&G as they thought you needed some thing over 50Cal. I showed them of the three one shot kills with the 45 and they let me off.

Re: Time Flys

Unfortunately I don't get to OC all that often. Let me know next time you are down here. It sure seems like you'd have some good stories to tell. Pretty tough to argue with the .270's success. I shoot it's big brother the '06and it's new stepchild the .270 WSM. Along with a whole pile of other stuff like a couple .300 savages, a .243, and of course a 30-30. I too have a Hawken black powder that I love to shoot. It's a big .54 cal. I've killed a couple hogs with it. It shoots surprisingly well. I need to dust that thing off.
