state check points

A buddy and I were recently having a discussion about bringing game back into CA from out of state. Technically you are supposed to have a declaration form. If you get stopped they will usually give you one there that needs to be filled out. I'm pretty sure those forms wind up in the trash and are probably used for nothing. Actually, I don't think those checkpoints are good for much, period.

That got me thinking. I've hunted all over the western US, sometimes crossing multiple state lines in a trip. I don't think I've ever seen another state with an inspection station.

So why does CA have these and other states do not? What purpose do they serve? What makes our state so special?

Seems to me that shuttering them would be an easy way to save the state money but maybe they do accomplish something I'm not seeing. Anybody have any real experience with the work these stations actually do?

I have often wondered this same thing. No check point going in to AZ only on the side coming in to CA and similar in others. I am curious as well.

California's agriculture business is huge. We prdouce more here in Califprnia that a lot of other states combined. They're just trying to protect that business.

Sometimes I think they're a waste of time but if something does get through you never know the economic impact it could have.

So other states don't care about fruit flies or agricultural pests? What about big time ag states like the mid west. Do they have checkpoints?

I wonder if they have ever done a cost vs benefit analysis to see if the number of pests or problems that they catch and/or prevent is actually worth the expense involved.

I think a lot of it has to do with the different ag that is grown here. In the midwest you're mostly dealing with wheat, etc.

We have a huge citrus crop along with a lot of other ag that isn't grown anywhere else.

I was doing some reading on it and we have a lot of natural barriers that keep most invasive species and insects out, ocean to the west, large mountain ranges to the east, desert to the south and southwest. People bringing in stuff with them can be an issue as those pests may not have been able to get here otherwise. Most states in teh midwest don't have any natural barriers between them so the checkpoints would be pretty useless.

Top 5 agriculture exports, estimates, FY 2008

Product/Rank among states/Value million $
1. Tree nuts / 1 / 3,141.7
2. Fruits and preparations / 1 / 3,044.2
3. Other / 1 / 2,307.4
4. Vegetables and preparations / 1 / 2,021.3
5. Dairy products / 2 / 837.5

Overall rank / 1 / 13,691.0

We got checked coming back in from British Columbia one time and they pretty much stripped the RV down to the bone.

The guy kept going over to my dad and grandmother and asking if we had any lychees, longans, etc. It was pretty obvious we were being targetted because we were asian and they were looking for asian vegetables and fruits. Granted I've seen asians try to get in boxes of fruits and vegetables from overseas when they fly in so I can understand why they stopped us.
