The old 870

I'm planning on buying a Remington 870 for ducks and possibly other birdies. I have been reading on other forums that Remington has been turning out guns that have real bad jam issues. Like, jamming on the first or 3rd rounds. These threads/foums were all dated back to last year so maybe Rem. fixed the problem? One person mentioned that they had contacted Remington and a Tech admitted that they had miss-calculated barrell measurements and messed up on something like 10,000 shotguns.

I am concerned that when I go buy mine within the next few weeks, that I'm going to be getting one of these guns with a jamming and/or barrell issues.

Has anybody purchased an 870 Express within the last year, and have you experienced any issues?

Looking for a pump gun within my price range, and I'm not a particular fan of Mossberg (when you shake them, they sound like they are falling apart). Maybe a Winchester or Benelli Nova? I'd like to stick to the standby and legendary 870

Thanks

Kyle,

I purchased two brand new 870 wingmasters that both had feeding problems that would result in jams and failure to feed or double feeds.... I sent one back to remington and it came back with the same problems.... After a great deal of cussing, and pondering I figured out the solution.... Both of the guns have been flawless since I cleaned the inside of the mag tube and installed a brownells SS mag follower.. They have since been flawless.. The problems I have seen recently beyond the feeding issues I saw are that some people are getting 870s that have rough chambers from the factory... Some of the time the chambers problems are due to people simply not cleaning the preservative crap out of the chambers, other times its been a problem of the chambers not being polished correctly... In my case it was a $20 per gun fix and the dipshits at Remington couldn't figure out why the guns weren't right.. The shitty plastic mag follower was my problem....

If you look at an older remington 870 they have a metal mag follower and they work... Why the dipshits would try to cheapen the gun and compromise what is a brick shithouse design is beyond me... The really bad issue was when the plastic mag follower in my 20 gauge split and jammed up the works of the gun... That one pissed me off...

See if you can find an older Express. I had one for years and never had a problem. I think the newer ones have more plastic parts, too. Other than a walnut stock, better blueing and price, I could never tell a lot of difference in shooting a wingmaster vs. an Express. Wingmasters are definitely purdier.

Having owned both... I see a little better polish and finishing on the internals... But really nothing major... The one difference though, between the expesses and the wingmasters is the light contour wingmasters which are nice and light...

look for pawn shops that still carry guns and look for an older 870 if you can, find one that is pre 1990 you will get a good gun, just have someone that knows guns check it out. like the other guys said, unless you buy the top of the line new rems you will run into problems, because they tried to cut corners on the cheeper guns to keep the cost down,,,I have the top of the line older mag 870 and 1100 mag remmingtons and they have been flawless, a while back thought I had 1100 problems but it turned out to be reload powder problems, so good luck and happy hunting..

My one year old 870 Express had the problem. Rem. had me take it in to the gun shop in Fallbrook to have the chamber smoothed out and it has been perfect ever since.

I agree with Jason. What were they thinking? The 870 is a bullet proof design and I can only guess the hours that were spent on trying to figure a way to screw it up. And for what? To jepordize a reputation that has been earned over 40 years for a few bucks? Incredible.
I was given a DU WingMaster in 74 for my B-Day. Never forget it. I could only afford an 80$ Mossberg I had worked for all year. Had a plastic stock and wasn't built as well as my daisy BBgun. At 12 years old, all I could see was that cool gold trigger shinning brightly. My dad took me down to make the buy and surprised me when he asked to look at the 870. It has a beautiful medallion with the American and Canadian flags and the DU inflight duck below. I haven't used it for several years because of it's sentimental value, but if it were put back into action I know it would perform as it did on my first dove hunt. Flawlessly.
BTW, If I remember correctly, it was $150. Almost double the Mossberg, but 10x the value.

The Nova is probably the nicest pump gun ive ever shot.

Or look for a used Stoeger Model 2000 Auto. They are pretty cheap new, Used should be in the 300.00 price range.
