Nova will be fine, 3" steel 3's I/C or Mod will be good. Also, camo, cover face, most important be still and quiet. I try to shoot at the head of decoying birds, these rounds are fast. Have fun....

Seriously. Make sure your license is current, you have your duck stamps. No more than 25 rounds per person in the Blind. If your buddy is pretty experienced than he should be letting you know when to take the shots on decoying birds. A lot will depend on where you are hunting as well. We have had no real storms yet up North so, if you are hunting at Wister or San Jacinto, they will be old birds who have already been shot at, seen decoys and heard most of the calls. They will be seasoned. Make sure you a well camoed and keep still in the blind. I shoot a modified but if you have access to a light modified, it might be the better call. Steel shot is nothing like lead and the knock down power in comparison, is a joke. So, don't be surprised if you hit a duck with steel shot and they keep flying. I would stick with No.2s in 3 inch mag. Have fun. It really is a lot of fun.

i just gave some obvious answers!!!! hahhah oh well... good luck and ask questions...
if its anything like fishing... everyone has their own way of doing things...
so ask your buddy all sorts of questions .... its easier to annoy him with questions than annoy him with spooking the ducks and messing up the hunt

You got a decent duck gun... the Benelli Nova is a great duck gun... that is what I use to miss most of my ducks!! It is very dependable, and should serve you well. Stay in full camo, stay still, and wait for the right birds to come by... there are so many freaking birds... seagulls, cormorants, gulls, terns... flying around out there it takes a bit of practice to find the right kind flying thru the freeway of birds! As Lt Dan told Forrest Gump...."Get down... shut up!"

Don't point and shoot. Swing your barrel through the bird, come from behind, through the tail and squeeze off the shot at the head or a little beyond depending on speed and distance to the target. If done properly your barrel will continue it's movement after the shot is taken. By swinging through the target you will string out your shot pattern, creating an elongated oval as opposed to a circle, increasing the odds of bringing down the bird.
As someone who does alot of goose hunting from an elevated position over water, it never ceases to amaze me how many people shoot behind the bird as evidenced by the shot pattern hitting the water. Especially true for honkers as they are flying alot faster than they appear to be.
If possible, several rounds of skeet (high house/low house crossing shots) will help in getting the swing of the gun dialed in as well as the amount of lead necessary to effectively strike the target consistently.
