well here in Oregon you can bait deer/elk ,I have not done that ,there sre just tomany animals out there to have to do this ,apples work good from what my friend told me ,and since they grow a lot here ,I cant` wait for my elk season to open up three fricking months of Elk hunting right out my front door
Did they catch the guys with the mineral licks up near Horse Heaven campground?
The reason I ask is two years ago my hunting group meet them, sure seemed nice enough bunch of guys....until they pulled out the laptop and showed the pictures from their trail cams. All the pictures had the deer with their heads down next to the same log. I could not believe how stupid they were, we knew they were baiting with something just didn't know what or where or if it was still out there. My group knew this was not going to be good for our stands that were nearby.
We hunted in our stands that weekend and I did take a doe out of one of the stands Sunday morning. On Saturdays afternoon hunt one of the guys that we meet on Friday afternoon had put up a stand about 80 yards away from mine and I could see him from my stand. I know it's public land and decided that's the luck of hunting on public land. The next Friday I was in my stand hoping for a deer like last Sunday. I looked over where his stand was and keep seeing deer directly under his stand wtf??? I later got down before dark and sure enough I found a lick right where the deer were. I was so pissed that I picked up the 3 blocks took them down the mountain and tossed them in the thick brush hoping he would get the hint. I did not want to call F&G and have to move 3 stands that would have been illegal due to this dumb ass and I thought for sure he would get the message.
The next time I was up the hill I walked over to his stand and sure enough he had a new lick down. I called the F&G hot line and did not hunt any of my stands that were nearby again. Last year the same dumb ass was back to his old tactics and I called F&G again this time 2 weeks before the opener. I told them I have three stands nearby that I can't hunt due to this guy, I also told them some of my hunting buddies have found other stands nearby with licks on them. I gave them all of the gps cords this time and told them this is the second year this has been going on and please stop this because I can't hunt this part of the MT. And this part of the MT. has had good deer on it for years before this dumb ass started this move.
What is so stupid about this group of guys is the location of this stand has good deer trails right under it before they started this. In fact in the past we have killed 4 deer within a 100 yards from this stand over the years. Some people just don't get it.
This year I didn't even bother checking the stands for licks and just gave up on that area. One good thing that has come out of this it's forced me to get on the ground and spot and stalk hunt, which has turned out to have worked real nice for me in the last two years.
