What cal is right for me!

I live in San Diego and have access to 165 private AC about 45 min east in the mountians, 4000ft elevation. I originaly was thinking .22-250 as kind of an all around gun for yotes and squeeks. Recently, I've decided that I might want to give mule deer hunting a crack and was wondering if one calliber can do all the jobs. However, I'm used to hunting Missouri white tail and would never try to take a deer with anything under a .223, my old deer standby as a kid was a .308 win.. That said, I know the local mule deer population is a bit slighter in build compared to the white tails back home. All that said I think I'm leaning towards a .223

Besides my .22LR and 20GA I've been kind out of the gun world for a while and ammo price in a consideration. Especially since I feel like I need considerable range time before I go hunting.

I feel like I'm really going to want to push myself as far as distance goes, especially where the squeeks are concerned.

I'm looking to pick up something slightly used in the $400 to $600 range plus optics.

Specific wepon reccomendations are welcomed.

Thanks in advance,

Keith

On the light side I would say .243
If you use to shoot a 308 thats another good choice. Its what I carry. Or the 7mm-08 is a great round for around so cal.
If ya want a gun thats on the lighter side of the calibers I would look at .243, 7mm-08, 25-06, or the .308.
And if ya want a good shooter make sure you look at the Tikkas. There are a lot of good guns on the market, and Tikka is just one of them. I know after buying my Tikka In .308, I will buy another Tikka for my next gun. Very Light to pack around all day and it shoots as good as the shooter can or better!!!

Look on gunbroker.com and you can find good deals on any gun. Just have it shipped to an FFL localy. I saved about 200 bucks on my gun by buying it online.

243 is a minimum in California by law

anything from 243 to 30-06 works great. There's no real need for a magnum around here.

.243 with 100gr is perfect for local deer. It's a little much for yotes if you want the pelt.

There is no min on cal. in Ca. Just needs to be center fire and a soft point or expandable.
2009 pg. 17 353. title 14,ccr Methods Authorized for Taking Big Game. Also in a rifle there is no mag limit. but in shotguns or black powder there is... Lol c if you get it..
