Thoughts on cleaning some serious fouling

Picked up a Ruger GP100 357 that has been shot some (not too much and probably mostly 38 specials) but not cleaned....has some serious lead/copper fouling in the barrel and in the cylinder...There probably isn't any pitting, just a load of fouling. I'd thought about a 40 cal brush and #9 for the cylinder and just lots of #9 and a brush for the bore...It's really dirty...any thoughts on a good way to clean up the mess?
Thanks

Soak those areas with CLP for a day or two. It will break it up for easy removal.

Also, shake the CLP vigorously prior to application. Most folks make this mistake and don't realize why it doesn't work properly.

X2. Good stuff. Cleaned a lot of 5" gun barrels with CLP!

If the copper fouling is that bad you're going to need something with more balls to get that crap out... Sweet's 7.62 solvent will get that crap out in a hurry...

Gunslick Foaming Bore Cleaner works like a champ, patches come out blue from the copper fouling. Repeat until they come out white. then lightly lube with Breakfree. I don't think Breakfree will break down copper & lead fouling, but it's a kick butt lube/protectant.

It will. I have cleaned many heavy guns (50 cals., 60's, 240's, 25mm chain guns and numerous others) with thousands of rounds through them and in a very short amount of time with the CLP. You just have to be patient and let it do it's thing.
You have to be careful with a majority of the "quick" clean solvents as they can harm many of the different surfaces.

I failed to mention Mortars are cleaned in this same fashion.

I restore antique gas engines (hit and miss type) and always have Kroil on hand...it's the best of the best of the best for busting loose rusted parts and saving priceless old iron. I have heard it's a great solvent for cleaning fouling and may give it a shot. I ordered some of the GI CLP on the internet today. Thanks for all the tips guys...I got some things to work with...I'm not in any hurry and won't take a chance of damaging the canon..
