If you're doing any hiking in cold weather, I would use Thorlo or Smart Wool. You can buy either online from REI. Moisture wicking liners can be a good idea too....

You will not be disappointed with these. I have worn them on all my hard core hunts and other outdoor hiking for 15 years. I use the hiking/mountaineering socks, apparently they make cold weather hunting socks too.

100% Merino wool. Wool is the only way to go. I just got back from Montana where I did alot of still hunting in 25 deg. I used Danner wool with a thin merino liner to wick with. Very toasty.
Learned something very valuable on this trip too. If you have a problem with sweat build up from a hike to your stand, try using a gel antipersprant on your feet. Maybe you guy's were aware of this tip but I wasn't. Dry feet are warm feet. Worked like a charm.
As for the hunt, struck out. Had a nice Bull give me the slip the last day. Instead of taking that last step that would have exposed him for a shot he quartered away and slipped out. Oh well, next year.

The dry feet thing is a good point, I were flip flops about 320 days a year so when I put on thick socks my feet sweat then get cold, I am getting the ones that wick away the moisture.

Dead down wind came out with a powder this year. I highly recommend using it in your socks and boots to help with the moisture problem. The fact that it kills scent is just a bonus!
I don't have anything against smartwool and merino wool socks but I prefer Thorlo for all my outdoor activities. They make a sock called the light hiker. It has coolmax and works great for San Diego hunting and hiking.
Thorlo uses a wool/thor-lon mix in their mountaineering socks. This combination is superior to all others that I've tried. I've carried several loads well over 100lbs wearing these socks with my heavy duty danner rain forest boots. Any hard core hunters will love these socks.

Another very inmortant point is to make sure your boots are not too tight! No circulation means cold feet too!!
