That's kinda what I thought it was.
You were removing rust stains from fiberglass, not rust from a ferric surface, right?

Im big on knives. I have many knives that are high carbon japanese steel which all rusts very easily. I take all precautions on keeping them well oiled and dry, but sometimes I miss something and withing 30mins, spots will start rusting. This is what i use. Korin knife rust eraser
If its really really bad, naval jelly also works good in removing rust, but be very careful with it as it can start taking away too much metal.

Everyone else was already working on getting him some rods and reels to fish with, but he lost his box too. What I sent him was all the stuff he needed to fill a new box for fishing local out of Oceanside. He told me it was too much so I told him to share it with his buds on base!
It was no biggee to me and I was happy to do it.

| Removing rust...
Find a tall container, fill it with vinegar and submerge the blade (keep the vinegar away from the handle.
Let it soak 24 or 48 hours and you'll find most of the rust will disappear.
You'll then need to clean the blade, rinse with rubbing alcohol and rub down with a light preserving machine oil (not wd-40, as that's basically kerosene).
From there, you can either work the edge back yourself, or send it to a good knife shop who can start building the 'edge' back. Be sure to talk to them about the type of edge you want to restore as you'll basically be deciding between a 'working' edge vs a 'cutting' edge, with the former being more durable.... or of course..., something in-between.
Cheers and Good luck...
Bill

Hi Bill!
I've used that to get rid of "green" corrosion on copper, brass, and bronze, but I never tried it on a ferrous material for rust. I might have to give it a try. But after I get a hands on with this blade, I'm thinking a light bead (Glass) blasting, which will also hide some of the surface pitting and restore the original surface look of the blade.

To do it properly, the blade should be bead blasted with very fine material. This will not only remove the all the rust including that from the deeper pitting, but it will also maintain the "dull finish" original look of the blade.
You will also want to strongly consider getting a new sheath for it. The old one will still have rust inside of it and it will only start rusting the blade again if the knife is returned to it.
As for a new sheath, you may have a better source for it than I do, but you can get them here: https://www.kabar.com/index.jsp
With all that in mind, and in consideration of your service, I'll make you an offer. If you'd trust me, send it up here to me and I'll get the blade done for you N/C, including a good sharpening.
And to prove my good will, here are some bonafides. http://www.bloodydecks.com/forums/fi...a-dreamer.html (Thanks to Baja Dreamer)
Besides the original poster, there was a young man named Chance that also posted in this thread who went by the handle “fishin4fun”, and he was a Marine at the time this was posted.
I don’t mind doing favors for Marines at all. I had one nephew that was a Marine, and I still have a nephew that is a Marine and is currently on deployment. Any small favor that I can do for you guys is nothing compared to what you do and have done for us. | Outstanding reply Chris!
Thanks for the info.
