Do not, absolutely do not, buy a bow without shooting it first. A bow is all about personal feel. What I may love you may hate. Quality and performance is so close these days that brand really doesn't matter. Go to a bow shop, or two, and shoot everything in your price range that can get your hands on. Disregard what your buddy shoots and what Joe Schmo thinks you should shoot. Only you can make that decision and it should be based entirely on what you shoot the most accurately and what feels best in your hand.
That said, if money is a concern, make sure you check out the Bear Archery line. They make some great bows for the money.
Or, if you have a some friends that will let you test shoot their bows you might be able to find one you like and pick up a used model. Depreciation in bows is incredible. The setup I paid $1300-1400 3 years ago might sell for $500-600 now. Check out the classifieds on
