Southern hunting

Thought I would share with my dive friends a good hunting story.

Flew back to the East coast for a bit if Diving and hunting with some friends this past weekend.
As you all well know the weather wasn't co-operative for offshore adventures.

So I decided to par-take in some good ole boy southern hunting on a 10k acre Plantation.

Now Jackson SC. isn't at all a major metropolis. Just a quiet town south of Aiken, bordering the Savahna river.
Rich in southern tradition, Cowden Plantation has been in the Jarrett family for quite some time.
Jay Jarrett is now proprietor of the acreage and the Gun shop known world wide as Jarrett Rifles.
Jarrett rifles founded by his dad, Kenny Jarrett, builds some of the finest and most accurate rifles.
This accuracy is proven before each rifle is shipped to a customer.

Now Tuesday the weather co-operated for deer hunting and as I watched some small bucks and does play with each other
for an hour after sun-up. They finally decided to rest and slip off into the woodline.
At that moment I decided to peer over my shoulder in time to see this monster crossing some 20 yds behind me. As fate would have it, turning around to
shoot with an 8 mm long barrell, in a cramped wooden tower stand, I managed to bump the corner of the stand an make a little noise....
Which the buck heard and BOLTED about 40 yrds and to my supprise... stopped ........BIG MISTAKE...the 8mill
dropped him like a sack of potatoes.

Re: Southern hunting

nice southern buck, I hunted south carolina a couple years ago, loved it! # 1 on my economical hunt list
if I remember right, NR license was 125.00 and some of the county's have very liberal bag limits, we had no limit on bucks on private property.
every time I talk about southern whitetails someone always says, ya they don't get that big though, well
maybe not heavy bodied like their northern cousins
but soybeans & acorns sure grow nice headgear!
your pic proves it. plus some of the best venison I have ever tasted. congratulations again!

now I want to go back.

Sako is my choice of actions, Shilling Barrells, Nosler partion, manual loads.

I normally use a 300 win mag or 280 Akley improved for longer flat tragectory. Some of the bean fields are quite large in the south.
Dense forestry i'll opt for a short 308 cal for someting inside 50 yrds.

Three of my five tropheys were shot from the ground, less than 20 yrds from my position.
