A lot of it burned the last couple years. They will likely close it again to hunting until the first rains come. I don't get many chukar there, but there are valley quail and mountain quail up there. I got pissed because of the closures the last couple of years, so I have been driving way north, to the sierra foothills. I am a much happier hunter for it. I have found lots of BLM and nat'l forest land below Millerton lake, and that area that held good quail numbers. I also have hunted up to Bishop. I found lots of chukar and quail both up there. I like that best, I can go fish for a few hours when the hunting gets too tiring. If you can hunt Los Padres, look for the edges of the burn areas, new grass should be growing from the rain last weekend. You'll find birds close to the new growth.
