Hog Hunting in Central California

Over the years I have had the opportunity to hunt wild hogs on private ranches west of the Paso Robles area and have always done well. There is no limit on hogs and no season which means they can be hunted year round. The ranch owners do not like the hogs because they tear up the ground and crops and usually want them killed. A female pig (sow) can lay up to 3 litters of piglets per year so controlling their numbers is nearly impossible. I would say that the months of June and July are best because the barley crops have matured and the pigs are very predictable, feeding in those fields every morning and evening.

I have taken hogs with rifles, handguns and archery equipment. With the number of hogs and the fact that they can be hunted year round with no limit, it is no wonder they have become California's number one big game animal.

I have attached some photo's of some of the hogs I have taken and photographed over the years...

Re: Hog Hunting in Central California

Nice. Some bigguns there. Is it me or does that second one only have three legs? Looks like it is missing a front wheel. Were these killed on a ranch where anyone can go, after paying a fee of course, or do you have a personal hookup? I also have the same question as One Track, where did those 2 big Russian looking boars come from? Cedar Canyon?

Re: Hog Hunting in Central California

Nice Hogs.....
It's unfortunate the various guide services have put the price of pig hunting out of the common mans means. The property owners have complained about the destruction, but want a minimum of $300 to give you the opportunity to help them. I am aware of their liability, their cattle, etc. And the fact that there's too many Yaaahoooo's out there who don't respect the private property, but... I don't want to hear about their pain. They can go and shoot them if they were inclined to.
Sorry about the negativity, but I've contacted several ranch owners over the years, and only gotten invited on 1 ranch. This owner invited us back a couple of times, but has since sold the hunting rights to an outfitter. Most of the other owners want to cash in on the animals on their property. They feed em, so they want a return...

Re: Hog Hunting in Central California

Hey guys, you are correct ...the second pic is of a 3 legged hog that was running like it had 6 legs when I shot it. The 2 long haired Russian boars did in fact come from Cedar Canyon on a archery only hunt sponsored by Bob Fromme at Performance Archery in San Diego. I actually arrowed 3 boars that afternoon making for an expensive hunt.

Most of the hunting for hogs that I do is on private ranches in the general vacinity of Lake San Antonio west of the Paso Robles area. Over the years I have developed relationships with these ranch owners that allow me to hunt on their land. I met one ranch owner who loved to eat fish. I do alot of long range fishing as well so I always hook this guy up with wahoo and tuna which in turn gets me access to his 4,000 acre ranch which is just loaded with hogs. It is a way of letting one adventure open the door for the next...

If anyone is looking for a good guide up in that area I would recommend Tom Willoughby. I do not have his number but I believe he lives in Paso Robles or San Miguel. I hunted with Tom once, on my very first hog hunt, and scored a nice boar the first morning, and I was hooked on hunting wild hogs. A local meat processor told me that Tom sends him 400 to 500 pigs a year so obviously he knows where they live and has leased ranches that consistently produce.

Here are a few more pics...
