Barrett Lake 1/03

Left the office in Irvine Tuesday night @ 11PM and headed straight to Barrett. 2 hours later and I was at the gate. Got 2.5 hours of sleep then woke up. There was only one other car at the gate waiting with me. I got out and we chatted waiting for Bill to open the gate. By the time Bill got there we had 4 groups waiting, a lot less than normal. Checked in and waited for Smudge and Fred from the Daily Double to show. They got there and we loaded the boat. The lottery started and I had first pick to see what my pick for the blinds was going to be. I ended up drawing pick #1!!! I put us in blind 8. We got there and set up the dekes. Everything looked good but there were no birds flying. We finally had a flight of gadwall and spoonies come in that we got 2 gadwall and 1 spoonie out of. Had one teal that landed further back that Fred did the sneak on and shot. By this point it was 9AM and we decided to boat hunt the other part of the blind. Fred decided to stay put and wait for the birds we flushed out. Smudge and I rowed in and parked on shore. We did the sneak on the birds and started shooting. We knocked down a bunch of birds. Time was running out so we packed up and tried to round out our limits boat hunting on the way back in. We knocked down a gadwall that we lost in the brush. Ended the day 2 birds shy of our limits. We did end up losing 4 birds, I really need a dog.

Highlights of the day were getting Fred out there for his first hunt of the season and watching Smudge double on teal. I think Matt is becoming addicted to waterfowling.

2 Gadwall
2 spoonies
6 GW teal
9 ringneck

All in all the best shoot I've had at Barrett this year.

Sweet dude, I am officially jealous. Nice fricken day! Any cherry Necks or were they all not mount worthy? I need to get a big bull for my collection.

I had a really big drake that would have been good. You'd have to ask Smudge though, he may have cleaned it already.

I don't want yours, I was wondering if the nice ones were in yet so I can go slam one myself! I need some more divers in my collection! Once again, way to go dude!

Nice! Fortunate to knock out blind #9. Multiple picks can be a good thing at Barrett!

Did you make Matt take all the birds?

Ya know I have a dog that always needs work. I just have to show/tell you a few commands and you'd be good to go. He's almost got the hand commands down now.

I got a dog ticket the other day while training him.. %$@$#!

There are some nice ones in there. The problem is you really need to get in the right blind to do well. We did a ton better than the rest of the lake. I'd bet they were looking at a 2.5 birds avg. at best.

I might have to take you up on that one of these days. One ringneck hit the water and all we saw was a spray of blood. The bird dove never to be seen again. Fred shot one gadwall that swam off before Matt and I got back with the boat. A gad and a ringneck hit the shore in heavy brush and just disappeared. At least 2 of them would have been retrievable with a dog.

I took 2 GW teal and let Matt and Fred split the rest of the birds.

When are we hitting the river again? I have the weekends of the 20th and the 27th open.

New years eve I got up early and decided to work on some things with Gunner. Cruise over to the park and nobody is around. Work on the basic hand commands for about a half an hour. Walking back to the truck an animal control guy pulls in behind me and gets out of his van asking me for my liscense and my dogs liscense. I joking say he doesn't drive. No sense of humor! I usually keep his collor in the truck but I left it at the house. Long story short he gives me a ticket for my dog "wandering", no liscense and no proof of rabies vacine. All that stuff is at the house. Christ he's legal and even chipped. But since I didn't have it, he gave me the ticket. I have to go to court in March or pay the $200+ fine.
I don't put a collar on him for hunting season. He is pretty well trained to stay with me until I release him. He said he would just have given me a warning if I had the liscense. I told him to hold onto the dog and I would run home and get it but he didn't like that.

Oh well, live and learn I guess.
