| Mendota 11/19
Headed up to Mendota for my first ever refuge hunt. I had no idea what to expect as well as how the sweat line worked. Got there and was 5th in the sweat line. Figured out where I was going to hunt and went to bed. Headed out in the AM with my buddy on our bikes with trailer in tow. Got set up and had a nice GW teal fly into the dekes. My buddy took the shot and dropped him. I had another GW fly into the dekes on my side and I dropped it on the first shot of the season. A trio of spoonies came in a little while later and I dropped one with another shot. My buddy missed the other two with all three shots. 2 shots 2 birds. That was all we saw for the morning. Went to lunch and then came back in and set up by myself as my buddy headed home. Had one greenhead come in but I blew it and watched him fly away. Had birds work the pond but couldn't get them to commit. Changed my spread 4 times but they were decoy shy.
Not many birds flying and from the sound of it we did a lot better than most. It was hot out. mid 70's and being in waders and a hunting jacket is no fun. No wind. There were hundreds of birds in the closed zone. We drove through to check it out and kicked up at least 200 mallards/pintails/teal. They went up and straight back down in the closed zone.
Slow start to the season but it was great to get out and kill some ducks.
Mendota is an awesome place to shoot. I would recommend getting a res though otherwise you could be fucked if it gets busy.
