Does antlerless still count for spikes shorter than the ears?

Re: Colorado Elk Hunt

brant, explain the either sex tag to me. Is it draw or over the counter? i always understood that you could buy the bull tags otc, but you had to draw the cow tags. didn't know there was an either sex option. Is that new?

When you apply, you list 1st, 2nd choice, and the area. You can draw a bull tag, cow tag, or either sex tag as a choice option. If you are hunting private land, you check the box and almost always get your 1st choice.

This year I didn't even go through the draw and just bought our cow tags otc the fri. before the hunt at the Dept of Wildlife. We were hunting private land, but I think there were plenty of leftover tags.

I know the either sex option has been available for at least 4 yrs.

Dog's only 1 yr and have only had him on planted pigeons. When I walk him on the beach he points everything from seaguls to sandpipers, and if a pigeon shows up at the park I can't get him off it.

Know any place to quail hunt? Wanna go?

Hope I answered your question...sounds more confusing that it is. I have a 2005 Colorado license book I can show you if interested. You and Tyler need to come down to the boat for a beer.

Re: Colorado Elk Hunt

Interesting. The last time I actually had a CO tag was in 01 and I don't remember that option. I've just been buying points since then. I know there are always cow tags left over, especially in zones with lots of private land, but you still have to apply for them right? Or at least buy them directly from the DOW. You can't go to the Wal-mart and buy unlimited cow tags like you can bull tags, right?

Let me know when and we'll come on down. It'll be a good excuse to get out of the office.

I know some quail spots down in the valley and way up by Hemet. I know of some potential spots here in SD county. I've seen plently of quail in these spots in years past. I just need to get out and bust enough brush to find em.

I've got a business trip this weekend then I'm down to go.

One of the guys I hunted with last yr bought a cow tag otc at wal-mart the day b4 the hunt. It just depends on the yr. No tags at wal-mart this yr eventhough there were plenty left over. Had to go the DOW.

May be down at the boat tomorrow evening with a buddy. I'll let you know and you can grab Tyler. Otherwise we'll catch up next week.

Anyways, start the hunt Sat morning. We get set up around 5:30 AM on a hillside we know which offers a good view of the elk when they move upward from the lower grazing fields and river.

At grey light we see the first elk...cannont tell if it is a cow or bull...still too dark. My girlfriend and I only have cow tags. We watch it dissapear from view and continue to wait.

A few minutes later two cows show up from the other side of one of the ridges we're watching...Only 150 yds!

This is Kari's 1st hunt where she will be doing any shooting. I look at the cow's and tell her to wait. They're two year old's and pretty small.

As we begin second guessing ourselves...wondering if we should have taken them, four more cows show up. I tell her to take the first one as it was the biggest. BANG...perfect shoulder and lung shot. I runs about 5 steps and starts coughing blood. A few seconds later it's down. AWESOME...she got her first elk with a .257 Weatherby Mag. 87 grain at 125 yds. One shot, one kill.

We're high fiving and she's all jacked up. We're still on the hill watching the dead animal...and low and behold another heard of 10 animals come over a different ridge. I tell her it's my turn and take sight. As they are running along the hillside I decide which cow to take, get in position and chirp the cow call which instantly freezes the group.

BAM...It hits hard and down she falls. .300 Weatherby Mag does the trick. 180 grain NP at 325 yds.

7:30 AM...hunts over. The other 4 hunters had already downed their animals, including a nice 5x5 Bull.

Now the work begins..field dressing 6 animals and loading into trucks. What a great hunt.
Great post Congrats on a fine Hunt. No one knows unless you have been there, Just how much work it is after you pull that triger. Great pecs. Jim
