My 'lope hunt

Last weekend my dad and i flew into el paso and drove 45minutes west to the border of texas and new mexico. it was a friend of our's ranch and he had land owner tags that he sold to us for th value he purchased them at. Drove around spotting and spotted a heard 800 yards away that we put a stock on. They were goin over a hill and all i saw was incredible lenght on the left side and pretty good prongs and mass so i shot it at 250 yards with a .300 wsm and it hit it behind the shoulder and it died in 10 seconds. When we came up to it i was dissapointed to see that the right horn was broken off at the tip. It ended up scoring 78 1/6" but i was very pleased.

We drove around some more and spotted a very large lope with huge prongs and tremendous mass. We stalk it and my dad shoots it from 450 yards with a texas heart shot and it drops. That .300 wsm is potent. it score 83 3/8" and made book. My dad was VERY happy.

Nice shooting, guys. That .300 is a good long distance round.

Re: My 'lope hunt

Dude, those are incredible goats! Antelope of several lifetimes! With a B&C awards minimum of 80 and an all time min of 82, you guys scored huge. Nice job! I'm sure you realize how fortunate you are. Every year people pay thousands of dollars for NM landowner tags. To buy those for a song and take goats like that is incredible! I am way jealous. I hope you get some nice mounts done. The .300 wsm is bad medicine. I have a .270 WSM which is the same case but shoots a little smaller bullet a little faster and flatter.

To put this in perspective fellas, the 83" goat is like a 350 lb+ yellowfin. Nationwide, there are not many antelope of this caliber killed each year.

Please do all of us hunters a favor, put together a nice story and submit it to a Western hunting magazine. I'll even help you, if you'd like. The pics and your story should grace the pages of Eastmans or Trophy Hunter. Those lopes deserve it. Again, fabulous job!,

Re: My 'lope hunt

Good job on your kill bro... Very nice! I recently bought a Remington 300 short ultra mag. I have yet to kill something with it but I like the round... I have loaded up some 165g Ballistic tips for it and they are nasty!!! I actually have them traveling as fast as my 7mm rem mag, I am very impressed with the round (extremely efficient burning at 96% i believe)... Once again, Good job!!!!

Re: My 'lope hunt

very nice...I never hunted & El Toro is pointing me in the right direction...got my .300 win mag. got the new leupold 3x9x40 scope which El Toro is going to help me mount.

After reading this, I am really itching to go.

How is Lope? Gamey? I love trying different types of meat...those Bambi burgers at the cast off were the bomb.

Re: My 'lope hunt

fishinfu, be prepared for some massive meat damage with that bullet going that fast. They are very frangible. While if hit right, they put animals down on the spot, they do a TON of damage in the process. Especially at high speed above 3000 fps. Also avoid hitting heavy bone. Those bullets have been known to blow apart on shoulder bones without penetrating. You probably already know this but I wanted to warn you. They are incredibly accurate though. If you haven't yet, try some of the Nosler Accubonds. They have all the ballistic advantages of a Ballistic Tip bullet, but are much tougher due to a bonded core. I love them.

Sorry about the rant, I guess you didn't even ask for an opinion. And I guess I hijacked the thread. Sorry about that. Back to the subject at hand.
