| I went out today, started at 1100 and planned to glass all north facing slopes for bedded animals. I was out with my best friend (5 yr old son). Sat down, first spot and started glassing. Rifle not chambered, range finder not out, front objective on the scope not set, shooting stixs not ready, what else. . . .ffice ffice" /> Glassing for about 10 mins and I seen a button buck on the move. He must had heard my son trying to be quiet. Started looking around for a friend and bingo, a decent forkie (ah kinda of on the small side). Anyhow panic sets in and the mad dash begins to get everything ready (im an dumbass). I got all of the stuff squared away and now im pissed. Started to look for the animals and I could not find them. Jump back on the glass and find the button buck, then I located his bigger buddy. By now his has moved a pretty good distance and all I have is a neck and head shot. I just watched him crest the ridge and chose not to shoot. I ranged everything after the fact, 246 yrd when I first seen him, 414 when he crested the ridge. All my son had to say was, "Dad, next time you need to be faster like a cheetah." Ran into DFG, they were cool. Checked me out to make sure everything was legit and they were on their way. Glad to see them out there, keep up the good work.
I'm still pissed, glad it wasnt a nice buck.

Some of us are busy on the weekends Nate!
I'm no rifle hunter...I'll be the first to admit that! I've spent my short hunting years in the rec area on laguna and really haven't ventured outside of that area much though I had logged this spot in my little brain sometime back while out coyote hunting. It wasn't an easy spot to get to because you had to cut through a couple hundred yards or so of heavy brush/trees and it was about a mile or so from my truck. My thought was that I'd have the backside of this heavily hunted ridge all to myself.
Well, I came to find out that all of this brush/trees were covered in thorns. It took me at least an hour to pick myself through this crap. Often having to backtrack because it was impassable in several areas but I was determined to hunt this area.
So, I finally get to my ridge and get a nice rock to sit on with a nice view of the meadow and brushline below. I did notice quit a few tracks on the hike in and thought this spot would produce. At @ 8:30 I had a hunter walk in from my right. That was all she wrote... ! There was a nice trail that led right to the dirt road I drove in on!

| 38 yds...
Hunted Sat a.m. unit on MCC property. Was told there was water, so feeling pretty smart finding some in the dark. went up the hill, heard trickling water...found where the spring popped out of the hill. Took a quick walk around, settled on an ambush site over the water. Saw 6 turkeys motoring around in the flats. 8:30 get up to change spots...look over and see a deer feeding. Head pops up and its a buck. Avg size...he looks at me, keeps me pegged for about 4-5 min. These animals have no concept of time, in a 1/2 crouch quads burning. Goes back to feeding, kneel down grab my gun ready to put the pod on the rocks in front of me. 2 huge snorts from another deer (I never saw), and they were gone under the trees. Ranged the tree he was under...38 yds.
Then went to another end of unit. Had a flock of 20 turkeys out front. As I was moving along, they got all nervous. Ranged them at 300 yds. So, I had to hobble along at their pace till I got to where I wanted to be. Set up in a shady spot on the end of a finger alongside a grove of trees. 10 min later 2 does and yearling come barreling out of the trees into the flats. Ranged at 148 yds, then 2 more come racing out. I go prone, chambered, safety off thinking a buck pushed them out. Waited 20 min for nada. Checked back in and there were 6 bucks taken from their property. Going back Weds.
