The original plan saturday morning was to head out and hunt the quail opener. We arrived in our are at 0500 to find no quail wanting to play. After trying and striking out on a few spots that we had seen them lately....and getting peppered by a few jerks, we decided to call it a day. Hunting without a dog is difficult at best for us. On the way home I could tell that my daughter was a bit disappointed that she didn't get a chance to try out her newly acquired skills with her 20g pump(she is hunting with a Montgomery Ward's store brand Western Field from the 50s/60s that I purchased for $100 and restored for her). She has been shooting trap with my wife and I for a few months now and was dying to hunt.
When I saw the disappointed look on her face, I figured that I better put her on some birds one way or another....so I gave Raahaunges a call and set up a hunt for sunday.
We arrived early to meet Tony and he set us up with a young dog and handler. We headed out and worked a field for some pheasant.
After 30 minutes we located our first bird, and this is what happended:
We located the second bird 30 mins later and as he took off, my daughters shotgun had a malfunction(safety broke) and she could not get a shot off at all. The bird ended up flying off a good distance away out of the property and we were not able to locate it.
About 40min later we located the final pheasant and my kid dispatched it on her first shot.
The look on her face is priceless and I can tell she is totally hooked.
Here she is with me, the proud papa!
