I'm glad nobody got too ruffled at my rant last night...it was meant to be humorous yet inflamatory at the same time. And yes, I hunt ducks, just not the same year that I draw elk or deer tags.
El Toro, your advise is exactly what I was looking for. I think one of my problems is that I've always hunted elk in the late season (December) rifle or archery because tags are way easier to draw. Calling that late in the year never yielded good results for me so I never really bothered to try and learn how to call 'em in during the rut.
I'm pretty good with the diaphram type call for turkeys so when I used the diaphram this fall, reflexes kicked in and I ended up doing a lonely hen yelp. I'll have to work on that.
This spring I purchased two "how to call elk" type videos. Both videos were basically infomercials for a certain brand call with not much real live footage. I didn't think my bugling sounded bad but the bulls I confronted basically held their ground and refused to come in that last few yards.
If anybody can recommend a good video I'd appreciate it.
The Elknut video series is the best I've seen. it's all informative with no sales pitch. Look here. Home
As for mouth calls, I really like the Primos Sonic Dome. For me they are really easy to use. mouthcalls are personal though. Some like one and hate another. You might have to try a few out to get a feel for what works for you.
