Well after 2 previously unsuccessful turkey seasons I finally got my first public land turkey.
Hiked in about one mile to get to my spot and was all set up and ready to go by 5:15 AM. I set up a single jake decoy and at first light let out a series of hen calls. No gobbles so I just hung tight and waited about 15 minutes and tried again - nothing. Waited another 10 minutes or so and tried again - nothing. Then about 10 minutes later I see a lone tom come walking up over the ridge in front of me at about 70 yards. He see's the jake decoy and makes a b-line right to it. The decoy was set up about 25 yards quartering to my left. He hangs up at a fallen tree 35 yards from me, staring at the jake decoy. At this point I'm trying my hardest not to choke - this is going too well.
I pulled the trigger and he dropped in his tracks! Woo-Hoo! I ran up to him and did a dance. Checked my watch and it was only 5:55 am. He had a double beard - a 9.5" one and a 4" one and had 1" spurs. Didn't get a weight on him but I'm guessing close to 20 lbs or so.

I was out yesterday on public land too. Saw the same sedan that I have seen before, he was in a different are though. Finally started seeing some birds, just all hens.
