Kona forecast
The weather is always the same. The winter storms coming down from the North and hitting the mainland normally don't get to us but the swell generated can. Some of them are huge for the northern part of the chain. The northern islands usually block most of the swell unless it is coming from the northwest and we almost never see the size that Oahu and Kauai have. Our winter days usually top out at 83-85 and the nights get down to the high 60s-low 70's.
Can't predict the fishing. Generally there are always Blue Marlin around all year, The stripes, spearfish and Mahi should still be here. This past year the ahi have stayed around every month and the ono have been hit or miss all year. Don't expect a hot bite though.
The waters in Kona will be very calm unless a swell is around and even then, if there are normal trade winds coming from the east, the two 14,000 ft volcanoes will block them and the period between the swells is long and the waters are still extremely comfortable.
Come on over, we will get you out on the water. The humpbacks should still be around even if the fish arn't.

I'm guessing you'll be flying into HNL. Good time of the year to go surf the North Shore, not as crowded as it is in the early season. If you're really into it, PM me and I'll show you some places that are, "off the beaten path" shall we say?
Otherwise, mahimahi should be running strong on N and E sides of Oahu, as well as Kauai, but who knows, this has been a weird year.

Josh,
I went to Big Island and Kauai for family vacation during Christmas Holiday in 2006.
I didn't fish there, but I got some information. If I go there again, I'd like to fish tuna in Big Island at night or rent a boat to run down to South Point for ono, ulua or ahi.
When it is calm, I would charter a boat in Kauai and catch monster ulua or do some bottom fishing around Nihau Island. A guy I know told me his jigs couldn't touch the bottom because of fish bites when he fished Nihau Island.
They are talking about $700 - 900 for 12 hour trip to Nihau Island.
My family said Christmas vacation to Paradise Village in PV in 2005 was better. |

I recommend you fish Kauai. The water's usually pretty rough, so there aren't a lot of boats out, which is good for real anglers.
Fish with "Action Plus Adventures" on the Happy Hunter, a 41 Pacifica. Tell Harry I sent you.
My son is the deck hand in the summers, so say Hi to him (Dylan) as well.
Here's one I caught on 50 pound, stand up. The seas that day were 12~18, typical when the trades get up.
Sorry about the crappy pic.
