Yeah,In Hawaii the Boat owns the fish,This is why charters are cheaper cause the boat can sell fish to offset the big price of fuel these days,Like you said talk to the people 1st and most times they'll work w/ you.............................
I just got back from Big Island today, this week two 800+ lb marlin caught and many smaller also.. Lots of AHI tuna and ONO. Trolling all day, lazy man fishing. Using Tiagra 130, Monster reels takes about 15 minutes to reel them in. With 45LB of drag.
What you need to realize about fishing in Hawaii Dr Tran is the majority of our fishing is done in water 500-1500 fathoms deep,We don't have a lot of pinnacles and seamounts like they do in Mexico and other places,When you hook a big Marlin or Tuna in water where there is basically no bottom they can sound and spool smaller reels and gear.
Also you were in Kona the Billfish Capitol of the world,Their always looking for that Grander to give an angler the fish of their lifetime,The 130's are needed for this,Not everybody fishes w/ strictly 130's,We fish 130's,80's and 50's
I fish the waters of Kauai,Been fishing and living here for 27 years,There's nothing lazy about Hawaiian Style fishing especially on Kauai water where on the average day it's blowing 15-25kts and 3-5 ft seas
Everywhere has different styles of fishing.........................
Would love to take you out for a 12 hour day to see if you could handle.............
