Trolling For Papio/Ulua Etc.

A friend of mine gave me a small boat and was thinking about going in K-Bay to do some trolling for some papio/ulua or anything that bites.

I have never done this type of fishing before. I have always been into big game fishing especially with me having to own a 24' Saltwater/Yellowfin, so with that being said!

My Question is what kind of lure should i use?

I was told curly tails work. Anything else???

Thank you..

The good ole faithful is Ika strips, salt em first so they get a little firmer, like overnight and if the fish don't bite em, you can eat them yourself....

For trolling I would just pull some Rapalas. I did best with 4-5" black and purple.

We always did alot better by whipping plugs over structure... but thats alot more work.

I use 4-5" yozuris, light colors on clear days and darker when its overcast, silver spoons have worked well too. I try to run parallel with the reefs. Good luck

In K-bay I like to do what Jens suggests. Work the reef edges on high tides and yozuri crystal minnows are good and easy to use. If the lures start skipping and popping out of the water slow down, and if that doesn't work you might have a defective lure but you can use pliers to adjust the plastic lip, sometimes that gets them working right. I like at least a 6 foot leader of about 20lb fluorocarbon. good luck

Frozen oama with an adjustable 2 hook rig knocks em dead. Cram a small torpedo lead down the baits throat to keep it from spinning and get it under the surface. troll @ 2-3 knots. If you find the papio and use this technique, make sure to only keep what you need, cuz you'll end up hooking more than enough.
