Shake down Fishing

Ran the boat on shake down yesterday out of Kaneohe Marina.....
GPS, Engine, and all systems "GO"
What is CB & VHF normal fishing chanels to monitor?
I tried radio checks CB - 23 and 69 VHF ....I can heard some chatter but no reply to radio checks.

We got hailed over by a sail boat to go in on a rescue run to save a group of divers in the channel....
Their boat broke free from anchor while they were diving.....and drifted away....Leaving them swimming for their lives.
Sail boat heard their yelling but could not go in.....without power.
My boat under power had the control to get in...... pickup one of the divers and take him to his drifting boat which was heading back to the island.....Then he retrived the others.

Made a run out to "U" FAD......Lots of birds.....No Love.
Then headed over to "LL" NADA......Could not locate "LL"
Is it still there or did it break off?
Headed back to "U" then back in..........
Then mad crazy run back in before the sun fell behind the mountains.
Wash boat in dark......
New 357 Mag 325 HP Mercruiser engine and Bravo III runs awesome.....and gets amazing gas milage.
I love this set up.

Shake Down Run

Hey Cappy,
Too bad about the fishing being kinda slow. The good thing is that you did a "good deed" and the next time you go out the gods will hopefully be with you. Nice to know that there still are mariners that respond to a call for help!

Thanks Russ,

It was spooky... with the brand new Bravo III props spinning in 10 to 12 feet of narly unsure water.... according to my depth recorder..... I felt screw it.... if I bang up the new props on reef these guys would buy me a new set..... They would? Wouldn't they?

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you, its a biblical priciple that still works, especially at sea where everyone becomes your friend when you need help. Good on you. If anything you know in your heart that it was the PONO thing to do, hey you might have saved a few lives too.

I think the sail boat played a major role in this rescue......
Power boats make too much noise. They would not be able to hear the divers calling for help in the water......
However, the sail boat was able to pick up their yelling.
I thought it was odd watching the sail boat flip a U-turn up by the head bouy....
Then they started heading back towards me as I was coming out.
I asked my partner what's up with this guy..... He 's heading directly at me.
I tried steering away from him and he kept coming at me.
Then I saw a couple of women waving at us.......
And I thought great we hit the jackpot......
Some women want to party........
Then they said no you silly male "Pigs"
There's some divers over there.....
Go rescue them........
Then they sailed away.............
Okay male brain moves north again and the rescue is on.
The sail boat played a major role..............
Those were lucky divers having the sail boat come by when it did.......

Nice to have a new power plant, sure gives you an edge of confidence that is needed when way out there in the briny blue and the weather is a crankin'. Nice to have good fuel consumption too, plus you got the "juice" behind you with all them ponies under you, bet you can get upwards of 30 knots with it. Tight lines.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention, when diving and no one is left aboard the boat, good idea to use nylon rope and TWO anchors. I always try to make it a point to check the anchor when first diving in, to make sure the line isn't touching a rock or in danger of fraying somehow. I also put a small floater just above the chain, maybe five feet away, so it helps keep the rope from making contact with the reef if the anchor someohow slips or drags. You can't believe how many times I've heard of guys boats running away from them. Some of the boats were never seen again too. The worst thing of course is a loss of life because of a simple remedy like two anchors.
"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" sure says it all here. Be safe guys. Always be "thinking" fellow BD'ers, it may save your own life too.

AMAZINGLY......I'm getting 43 plus MPH and I'm not holding WOT for sustained length of time.
I'm betting she goes 45 to 50 MPH on flat water no wind no load.
However fuel consumption goes from 2 GPH to 8 GPH in a flash.

Adios Amigo,

Cappy
