| "Holo-Holo fishing"
Okay, Just got back from a meeting in San Diego Wednesday night and I'm literally on the phone from the time the wheels of the plane touched down at HNL Airport. Much to my dismay no positive fishing reports and so I decided to put fishing on the back burner.....at least for a little while.....5:30am, Thursday I got up and did my morning work with my dog and by 6:45 I'm leaving my house to take my daughter and our neighbor to school. Driving down Waialae Nui Ridge I see the waters outside of Hi Kai flat as a lake as far as the naked eye can see! 7:00am I call my friend David and left message that I'm going fishing and to call me back if he wanted to go. 7:30am got a call back from David...LGF! It's 10:00am and heading out of Hi Kai channel we stop at "the secret place" to catch Opelu. One hour later after lots of palu and jigging ....NO Opelu ! Moved on to DH buoy, samething lots of palu and jigging, no Opelu! Running out of time and options, my friend Dennis N. calls and told me to go to that white buoy and check it out. So with nothing to lose I troll out there only to see a small bird pile -put out secret weapon and Hanapa'a!!! A small Aku..great ...now it's a live bait back in the water and in search of bigger game! As I approached the "white ball" David sees Mahi's swimming around and going to the Aku that is now dead and spinning. They try to bite it but back off???? Hmmm... baited up hooks with cut Opelu and it works...Hanapa'a! End up with 6 mahi's....small kine but we're happy, had lots of fun baiting and catching them and the best part is...we got kau kau. It's now little past 3:00 and time to fly it in with 7 miles back to the harbor and my daughters piano recital at 5:30 pm. Hard core to the end I put out three lures and was trolling at 9.5 - 10 knots and just around Nui Valley our corner takes off...a 25lb Ono! What a bonus to a short, fun packed, economical (burned less than 6 gallons of gas) day of "holo holo" fishing. Wish everyday was short and sweet like yesterday!

Right on! sometimes those last minute trips are the best kinds. My biggest marlin came on a last minute day when we left the house at 10:00 am also. Just gotta go

Roger that! I am beginning to like those"last minute" fishing trips. I know in years past those last minute trips rarely ended up successful and especially if time is limited, but this past year has really been pretty good! So far this year, Ive caught a 180 lb marlin and a number of Onos and Mahis on last minute trips of 6 hours or less. Especially with recent fishing overall not being that great, I may continue to fish on the moments notice and try to keep it short and hopefully sweet!

Capt Archer,
Thank you! Can you imagine if I had some of your "superbars" or meatballs! I was just talking to a friend a couple of days ago about getting some and wanted to find out where I could buy them. I wish I had them yesterday and who knows how many would have found its way in my bag!

Russ, nice day on the water and a good welcome home with the aku, mahi and ono. The mahi must've been pretty hungry trying to eat the aku! Thanks for the photo's and post.
